Customs: Weifeng gongs and drums:

Weifeng gongs and drums are popular in Linfen area A kind of collective percussion performance, named after the various brave gestures displayed by the drummers during the performance. It is often performed to celebrate the Lunar New Year, harvest, mass parades and other joyful occasions. The awe-inspiring gongs and drums are said to have first appeared during the period of Emperor Yao in ancient times. It has a history of more than 4,000 years. Every year on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, when Emperor Yao's two wives Ehuang and Nvying went to see their parents, people from Yao's tribe beat gongs and drums to see them off. When they came back, the people in their village also bid farewell to them in the same way

The Fifth Anniversary of the Lotu Travel Tribe, 2007 Tibetan Holy Land Wedding, Air Travel White Paper, Golden Week Travel Guide. Since then, the majestic gongs and drums have become a custom. Many large villages have their own gong and drum troupes.

Shannan Flower Drum:

Shannan Flower Drum originated in Wanrong County, and later became popular throughout the entire southern Shanxi region. It is said that Shannan flower drums were brought to Wanrong County by people fleeing famine in Fengyang, Anhui during the Ming Dynasty. There are three forms of Wanrong flower drum performance: high drum (the drum is placed on the chest), low drum (the drum is placed on the waist) and multi drum (the body carries multiple drums). Performers dance while banging, often accompanied by large gongs and cymbals.

Like puppet shows, shadow puppet shows often perform a folk story. Characters and props in the play are made of leather, and their outlines are projected onto the screen. Performers voice and sing the characters behind the scenes.

Kang Painting

Shanxi has the custom of painting on the walls around the Kang. These paintings were used to decorate rooms and protect painted walls. Kang paintings are rich in content, ranging from landscapes, flowers, birds, and beasts to history and legends.

Murals similar to modern Kang paintings were found in the Song Dynasty tombs excavated in Yuanping, proving that Kang paintings, a folk art, have a history of at least 800 years.

Embroidery

This kind of handicraft is very popular in rural Shanxi. Embroidery from various places has its own unique form: some are gorgeous and exquisite, some are solemn and clear, and some are simple and refined. There are three types of embroidery works: clothes, daily necessities and ceremonial decorations. On traditional clothes, embroidery is often used to decorate collars, sleeves and children's shoes, bibs and hats. Among daily necessities, a typical embroidery work is a pillow, some of which are designed into two tiger heads, a tiger head with a human face, a fish tail and a tiger head, or a frog. Nowadays, embroidery is more widely used on cushions, insoles, wallets and travel souvenirs. The embroidery works used in ceremonies mainly include curtains hung on temples and burial clothes.

Pingyang Wooden New Year Pictures

The art of Wooden New Year Pictures originated from Pingyang (ancient Linfen) in the Song Dynasty and was widely developed in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. After the fall of the Song Dynasty, the rulers of the Yuan Dynasty forced many printing workers to move from the south to Pingyang, making it the center of the printing industry, thus giving rise to Pingyang woodblock New Year paintings. Most of the Pingyang woodblock paintings were carved and printed by farmers who had this hobby in their spare time. Based on local customs and legends, the wood panel paintings mainly depict flowers, birds, fish and historical figures. Using exaggerated and vivid description techniques and bright colors, the pictures are full of local flavor and reflect the healthy, brave and romantic character of the local people. There are different types of Pingyang New Year pictures according to different uses. Some are hung in the bedroom, some are attached to doors and windows, and some are used to decorate the kitchen or table.

Huozhou Dough Sculptures

The locals call it lamb steamed buns. In ancient times, "sheep" was the same as "xiang", which means auspiciousness. Before the Spring Festival, farm women will make dough sculptures with images of kittens, puppies, tiger cubs, jade rabbits, chickens, ducks, fish frogs, grapes, pomegranates, eggplants, bergamots, etc. to symbolize good luck, longevity and prosperity. During the Cold Food Festival, the dough used to worship ancestors at their graves is shaped like a "snake panpan". It is said that eating the "snake head" can "reduce the poisonous head and avoid disaster".

On the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, Huo County has the most types of dough sculptures, including pig heads, sheep heads, wheat straw sets, needlework baskets, thimbles, scissors, needlework, sitting cakes, lions, tigers, foxes, etc. . The seventh day of the seventh lunar month is the "Qiao Qiao Festival". It is said that on this day, women can become clever by eating dough sculptures such as "needle and thread" and "thimble". In the first year after a new daughter-in-law’s arrival, her mother’s family will give her daughter “lamb steamed buns”. When the baby is one month old, the grandmother's family makes a "囫囵" with a diameter of more than a foot, that is, dough sculptures of the twelve zodiac signs are made on the dough circle. When guests come to congratulate them, they cut a piece of "囫囵" into pieces and give it to the guests to enjoy. Jiangzhou Dough Sculpture Jiangzhou is today’s Xinjiang County. During festivals, every household here uses flour to knead various dough sculptures to celebrate the festival. Because the dough sculptures here focus on dyeing and the colors are gorgeous, the locals call them "flower buns". The shapes of flower buns are exaggerated, especially the "animal flower buns" are the most outstanding. Wuzhai Noodle Fish The people of Wuzhai County in northwest Shanxi have a custom of making noodle fish. Kneading fish is to knead flour into the shape of fish. The kneaded noodle fish is colored and then dried over a slow fire, and then it can be collected as a handicraft. Noodle fish can be used as gifts for relatives and friends or as dry food when going out. In addition to kneading noodle fish, we also knead various types of products such as fruits, flowers, plants, animals, beasts, and humans, which are also commonly called noodle fish.
