The three pagodas of Chongsheng Temple in Dali, Yunnan Province are built on the soil foundation. Why did it stand thousands of years ago?

During Nanzhao and Dali periods, due to the prosperity of Buddhism, Buddhist architecture also rose accordingly. Many Buddhist temples and pagodas were built during this period. Dali's landmark building, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, was built during this period. In addition to promoting Buddhism, there is another important reason for building the Three Pagodas: "Dali was a country in ancient times, and there were many floods."

The ancient book "Jin Bian" records: "It is said in the world that the dragon worships the tower and fears Peng. Dali used to be Long Ze, so it is a town. " The stone carvings of "Jin Peng Bird" found at the top of Chihiro Pagoda and "Shenyong Shanchuan" written by Mu Shijie on the zhaobi of Tadong also confirm this point.

There are many legends about these three towers. Some people say that "there is an underground palace hidden at the bottom of the tower, and treasures are hidden in the underground palace." Therefore, at the beginning of the tower, special methods were adopted to make it stand for thousands of years. "

1867, with the failure of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, Du Wenxiu, the rebel leader who occupied Dali City, was besieged by the Qing court. In this war, most of Chongsheng Temple was destroyed, but the three pagodas were miraculously preserved. Until 2002, Dali people finally decided to rebuild Chongsheng Temple on the ruins, ending the situation of/kloc-0 without a temple for more than 50 years.

In addition to man-made damage, these three towers have endured thousands of years of wind and rain erosion and more than 30 strong earthquakes. Although they have deviated from the vertical line to varying degrees and tilted for more than 400 years, they still stand.

The most amazing thing is that during the Zhengde earthquake in Mingde, most houses in the ancient city of Dali collapsed and Chihiro Pagoda cracked like bamboo. However, in the aftershock, Chihiro Pagoda miraculously recovered to its original state. In the earthquake of 1925, the collapse rate of houses in the whole city reached 99%, but Chihiro Tower only knocked down the hall at the top of the tower. This is undoubtedly a miracle for the three towers built directly on the soil foundation without the stone foundation.
