To test Lu's wishes, Lu responded with a poem: "I was born in Confucianism and met with peace. I only wear hairpins and tassels but wear cloths lightly. Although I can strive for fame and fortune in the world, I serve as a minister in the Jade Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty." After Zhong heard about it, he knew that he was a man who could be crossed, so he tried his skills again, causing Lu to fall asleep in a coma. He dreamed that he had won the first prize. He was a noble man, and he was the prime minister. He was under one person and above ten thousand people, and he enjoyed all the glory and wealth. Ten years had passed, but he was suddenly convicted, he was dismissed from his official position, and his family was separated. His wife and children were separated. His glory and wealth were all gone, and his body was rickety and squat. A lonely and helpless old man wandering in the wind and snow. Huang Liang had a dream, life has changed for fifty years. When he turned around and woke up, he saw Zhong Du sitting beside the couch and said with a smile: "You are ups and downs in the dream, changing in many ways. In the blink of an eye, life has been fifty years. If you get it, you will be happy." How can it be sad to lose something? The white clouds are gray and the dogs are passing by, but the person you want is still fully enlightened. How can life be like a misfortune?" Lu Dun realized that Zhong was an immortal who had come to transform into himself, so he decided to follow Zhong into the Heling Mountains of Zhongnan and practice to become a true person. When he attained enlightenment, he swore an oath: "I won't save all the people, and I won't leave as immortals." After receiving the true biography, Lu Zu traveled among the people, visiting Jiang, Huai, Hunan, Tan, Hubei, Yue, and Zhejiang, etc., helping the world and transforming people. After the Five Dynasties, the situation was in chaos and the people suffered from migration. He often appeared in the world to save the poor people. His swordsmanship cut off worries, lust, and greed and anger, which had a certain influence on the development of teachings in the Northern Song Dynasty. Quanzhen Taoism regards him as one of the five northern ancestors, known as "Lu Zu" and "Chun Yang Patriarch".
Legend has it that there is a Qingyuan Mountain in Quanzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province. There is a cave under dangerous rocks, which is deep and huge. The entrance to the cave is quite flat and one can only ride horses and drive straight into the cave. There are stalactites hanging down from the top of the cave. The deeper you go into the cave, the heavier the cold air becomes. Deep in the cave, there is a stone room lined with stone beds, stone tables, stone benches, and a stone stove that was smoked black. Because this cave is commonly known as Chunyang Cave, some people say that Lu Dongbin was from Fujian and became an immortal in that cave.

Emperor Huizong of Song Dynasty named him "Miao Dao Zhenren", in the early Yuan Dynasty he was named "Pure Dao Yan Zheng Jing Hua Zhenjun", and in Yuan Dynasty Wuzong named him "Fuyou Emperor". During the reign of Emperor Zhenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, it is said that Lu Zu appeared to help when suppressing a rebellion among the people in Yizhou, and was later named the "King of Yingxianwu Lie". Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty believed in Taoism. In the first year of Xuanhe (1119), Lu Dongbin was granted the title of "Miaotong Zhenren" by imperial edict. There is a folk legend that Lu Dongbin was once frustrated in love, so he was jealous of lovers all over the world. If a couple in love went to worship, they would be separated. Although this is a nonsense legend, many people believe it to be true.
Lu Dongbin is one of the Eight Immortals in folklore. The other seven immortals are Han Zhongli, Lan Caihe, Han Xiangzi, Cao Guojiu, Zhang Guolao, Li Tieguai and He Xiangu. Although Lu Dongbin is not the "boss" in the ranking of the Eight Immortals, his influence is unmatched by the other Seven Immortals. He, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva and Guan Shengdijun are the three gods that have the greatest influence on Duhui.
