Interpretation of Putuo Mountain Temple

Mount Putuo is located in the northeast of Zhejiang Province, China, the easternmost island of Zhoushan Archipelago. Together with Wutai Mountain in Shanxi, Emei Mountain in Sichuan and Jiuhua Mountain in Anhui, it is called the four famous Buddhist mountains in China.

Putuo Mountain is the holy place where avalokitesvara appeared. According to Buddhist historical records, in the middle of the Tang Dynasty (847-859), an Indian monk came here to worship, saw the appearance of Guanyin Bodhisattva with his own eyes, and was given seven-color gems, so it was called "the Holy Land of Mr. Guanyin". In 858, the Japanese monk Hui 'e (Hui 'e's work) asked Wutai Mountain for the Guanyin statue. When I returned home, I passed Putuo and tried to cross eastward by boat several times, but the boat was blocked by the waves and could not sail. So in the southeast corner of Mount Putuo, a statue of "refusing to go to Kannonji" was built to worship the gods. Since then, Putuo Mountain has become the Dojo of Guanyin Bodhisattva and started to create Buddhist temples. It has been built since then. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Putuo Mountain had more than 70 temples and many Maopeng besides three temples, which was known as "Haitian Buddhist Country".

The current abbot of Putuo Mountain is a master of forbearance.
