There are many books on this subject, and the original schools of thought contend that it is difficult to read. It is best to read some annotated ancient anthologies. For example, the first volume of The Ancient Anthology by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House is basically pre-Qin works, and another book, The Analects of Mencius, is annotated by Yang Bojun. Very good, introducing the background is very useful for understanding the original text; You can read both Zuo Zhuan and Historical Records. Very good historical works are also literary works, very classic. These are all easier to understand. I don't advocate junior high school students to learn from Laozi and Zhuangzi. On the one hand, it is not easy to understand, and on the other hand, it is divorced from reality, which is not good for young people.
There is also a history of thought. You can look at the history of philosophy and compare it with the history of thought in the pre-Qin and Han dynasties (Hou Wailu). For example, you can read more books introducing the thoughts of this era of the Republic of China, and those with strong classical Chinese skills can read more original works.
These are my own experiences and feelings.
