China used far more knives than swords in the Tang Dynasty, but so far no real tangdao has been unearthed, and its shape is inferred from historical records, murals and foreign existing swords. What modern people call "tangdao" mostly refers to the horizontal knives in tangdao's four systems (stranger knives, horizontal knives, barrier knives and instrument knives).
