His main achievement is literary criticism, and he commented on the Water Margin, The West Chamber, Zuo Zhuan and other Tang poems of Du Fu.
His evaluation of Water Margin is mainly as follows:
1. Cut the Water Margin in half
There are three versions of the Water Margin circulating today: 120 stories are complete and suitable for first reading; One hundred times, the story of tian hu and Wang Qing disappeared; Seventy copies are also called "golden batch copies". Jin Shengtan customized the vulgar version as a "wedge" for the first time, and reduced the second copy to 7 1 to form seventy copies, which is the version formed by Jin Shengtan's text arrangement and plot modification of the novel Water Margin.
In Jin Shengtan's view, the post-70s courtship plot is Luo Guanzhong's dog's tail followed by a mink. The golden edition of Water Margin ends with the chapter "Zhongyitang Shijie suffers from astronomy, and the heroes of Water Margin are frightened by nightmares". No wooing, no parting. Only Lu Junyi dreamed that Liangshan heroes were killed, suggesting the future direction of the Water Margin. It is "starting with a stone tablet and ending with a stone tablet." "
(It began with the release of the demon in the stone tablet of the Hongmo Temple of Qiu, and finally the stone tablet fell from the sky and carved a hundred pieces of land for eight days. )
There are different opinions about why Jin Shengtan cut the water margin. Some people say that this is Jin Shengtan's flattery to the court. With a stroke of his pen, he designed a bridge where Ji Kang killed 108 people as the end. In Jin Shengtan's time, thieves were all over the world, and robbers naturally flinched.
Some people think that the first 70 chapters of "The Water Margin" are about chivalry, where the hero turns his back, hits the treacherous court official and kills the bully, which is the "struggle" that the students at that time longed for. The last 50 chapters were accepted by the court, and people were killed and injured, one after another. It is the heroes who bow their heads and bend their knees to the court. This is not what Jin Shengtan likes, so they are all deleted.
