How to classify mahogany furniture?

mahogany furniture can be divided into three types according to the material of the product: all mahogany furniture, main mahogany furniture and mahogany-covered furniture:

1. All mahogany furniture means that all wooden parts of the product (except mirrors and mirror supporting plates and lines) are made of mahogany;

2. The main part of mahogany furniture means that the visual part of the product appearance must be made of mahogany, and other dark and precious hardwood or other high-quality wood can be used in the interior and hidden place;

rosewood: also known as "Qinglong wood". Red sandalwood, a rare treasure, is praised by the world as "the king in the wood". Rosewood grows in tropical jungle. Because of its unsurpassed material and slow growth, it is a kind of hardwood that grows one inch in a hundred years, and it can't be finished in hundreds of years. In addition, the yield of rosewood is extremely low, so it is very precious. Since ancient times, it has been called "inch sandalwood and inch gold".

Old redwood

The so-called "redwood" was not the furniture of a specific tree species from the beginning, but the general term for rare hardwood quality furniture since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. According to national standards, the range of "redwood" is determined to be 5 genera, 8 categories and 33 main varieties. Materials include rosewood, rosewood and rosewood, which are yellow-red or purple-red to varying degrees. And mahogany refers to the heartwood of these 5 genera and 8 categories of wood, and heartwood refers to the center of the tree and the part without living cells. Other furniture made of wood cannot be called mahogany furniture.

the characteristics of all kinds of wood are as follows: rosewood is the best in mahogany. Its wood is hard, the color is purple-black, dignified, heavy to the touch, the annual rings are silky, the texture is fine, and there are irregular crab claw patterns. Rosewood is divided into old rosewood and new rosewood. Zhao's Antique Guide emphasizes that redwood is a special tree species. In chapter 29 of the book, it says: "Only the so-called redwood in the secular world is a proper term of wood, not a red wooden word", which proves that one of the Woods in the book refers to old redwood. Old redwoods are produced in Indochina Peninsula, and also grow in Yunnan, China. Their leaves are oval, white and five-petaled, and their colors are red. "Except rosewood, mahogany is the best wood", which is the evaluation of old mahogany in the book. Ebony is black and shiny, with fine and dignified structure and a sense of grease. Ebony is more common in making small pieces such as chopsticks and ink cartridges, and it is rare to make furniture.

rosewood, also known as rosewood, is similar in composition to rosewood. Its wood is hard, red and purple in color, rainline in texture, soft in color, light in weight, and can float in water, like a wooden rib. Acid rosewood is commonly known as old mahogany. The wood is hard and heavy, durable, and can sink in water. The structure is precise with lemon red, deep purple red and purple black stripes, and it emits a pungent smell when processed.

old redwood and red rosewood can't be confused. Red rosewood refers to a large class of wood, which includes more than a dozen kinds of wood, such as Dalbergia odorifera, Dalbergia odorifera and Dalbergia odorifera. Old mahogany is just one kind of rosewood, namely Dalbergia odorata. Although both belong to Dalbergia genus, the old rosewood is purple in color, clear and varied in texture and fine structure, which is incomparable with similar rosewood. The latter process of making furniture with old mahogany adopts the same method as rosewood-waxing, and never use the method of ordinary rosewood-painting. Because the old mahogany is full of wax, it can be smooth and lubricated only by rubbing wax, and its luster is durable, giving people a kind of pure and implicit beauty. If the modern painting process is adopted, it just covers up the excellent nature of its wood. And the old mahogany is treated with paint, which is easy for some manufacturers to mix other rosewood wood, which provides convenience for them to fish in troubled waters.

new redwoods

Generally, new redwoods are baked to meet the use requirements, but artificial technical treatment can not shake the internal structure of the material, and in the long-term use process, it often produces subtle deformation, thus affecting the collection value and quality. In recent years, there are so-called Brazilian mahogany, Thai mahogany, Burmese mahogany, Lao rosewood, Vietnamese rosewood and so on. Because there are many different names and categories of mahogany furniture, the quality and value of mahogany furniture are also very different and different.

Therefore, whether we appreciate or collect mahogany furniture handed down from the past or buy modern mahogany furniture, we must first correctly identify the mahogany material used in the furniture.

first, the sour branch (old mahogany) is the sun branch, also known as purple elm. Grease is of high quality, fine structure, hard and heavy, and can sink in water. What is particularly obvious is that dark brown or black stripes are often sandwiched in deep red. Sour branches are called redwoods in the north, and old redwoods in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

Second, rosewood pear is also called Hualv. Historical records can be divided into at least two kinds. One kind is the rosewood of Wang Zuo's "New Gegu Yaolun" in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, which is in the south of China and Guangdong, purple-red, similar to the fragrance of Dezhenxiang, but also fragrant, and its flowers have a ghost face, that is, the rosewood called in the wood category of Qiongzhou Prefecture, which is red and purple, similar to Dezhenxiang, and has a slight fragrance. This is obviously beyond the concept of mahogany. The other is rosewood which is called old rosewood in the north, but it is actually a new rosewood. This rosewood is called mahogany in Taiwan Province. This kind of rosewood is recorded in "A Survey of Natural History" that the leaves are like pears but not solid, the wood color is red and purple, and the texture is delicate, so it can be used as utensils, tables, chairs and study rooms. Chen's Taxonomy also said that rosewood belongs to the genus Red Bean. Many mahogany furniture in the Qing Dynasty was actually made of these rosewood. South sandalwood is huanghuali. Here, we have to ask such a question. If there were the above two kinds of rosewood and rosewood furniture in the Ming Dynasty, why was there almost no introduction of rosewood furniture except huanghuali furniture? Besides mahogany furniture, rosewood furniture was rarely introduced in Qing Dynasty. If it is said that rosewood furniture was indeed produced in the Ming Dynasty because of confusing the identification of timber varieties, and there are relics handed down from generation to generation, then today, our understanding of this cultural phenomenon of mahogany furniture will have more profound significance.

third, a kind of rosewood (new rosewood), which is called new rosewood in the north. The color of rosewood is redder than that of common rosewood, but it is lighter than sour branches, and its weight is not as good as that of sour branches, so it does not sink. Coarse and straight texture, few pith lines, pure wood and good impression. Imported in large quantities in the 196s, it was often used to make export furniture.

IV. Red bean wood (redwood) Red bean wood belongs to Leguminosae, also known as acacia in ancient times. Wang Weishi went to when those red berries come in springtime and flushing on your southland branches. Hope miss the person to collect more, Xiao Xiao red bean caused people. In ancient times, red bean wood mainly grew in China, Guangxi, Jiangsu and the central region. The wood was heavy and red, and the pattern was natural and beautiful. Bean wood furniture can be found in the relevant archives of furniture made in Yongzheng year of Qing Dynasty. There are two red bean wood cases with rosewood teeth, one red bean wood table, one red bean wood batten table, one red bean wood sleeve bed and two red bean wood short thrones. Mr. Zhu Jia noted that red bean wood is mahogany. In 1982, I visited the furniture of Ming and Qing dynasties in eastern Zhejiang, and found a small desk that looked like mahogany, but the owner told me that the small desk was ancestral and made of red bean wood. It can be seen that among the mahogany furniture circulated among the people, there is also red bean wood

5. Brazilian mahogany Brazilian mahogany is famous for its red or reddish purple color because it is produced in Brazil. China used it to make furniture only after 197s. There are many varieties of Brazilian redwoods, including Brazil No.1, dark heartwood, which has the same structure as rosewood and is slightly harder than rosewood, but it is dry and easy to crack and still floats in water; Brazil No.3 wood, with fine structure, purple heartwood, heavy, hard and strong, can sink in water; No.3 wood is sometimes similar to old mahogany, but it is easy to deform and crack after being made into furniture.

6. Other varieties of redwoods have various new names, such as Thai redwoods, Myanmar redwoods and Laos redwoods, depending on the origin. The so-called Thai mahogany is actually fragrant mahogany or rosewood; Myanmar rosewood is called Myanmar red for short, and Guangdong is called Myanmar rosewood; Laos rosewood Guangdong area is called Laos rosewood. Most of these varieties are named after the place of origin, especially the latter, which often has mixed species and different textures. Its most obvious characteristics are grayish yellow and light grayish white in color, loose in texture and light in weight, and some of them can no longer be compared with mahogany, nor can they be classified as high-quality hardwood, let alone precious wood. Since ancient times, the judgment and identification of wood materials have always been based on the size and curvature of wood, the hardness and weight of wood, the appearance and texture of wood color, the tenacity and fineness of wood, the thickness or tightness of fiber, and whether it is anticorrosive, moth-proof and fragrant. Therefore, people have gained considerable knowledge and understanding of all kinds of wood in long-term practice, and the classics of ancient books and the scientific introduction of modern works are all We can use all kinds of knowledge and experience when we identify the wood of mahogany furniture.

rosewood and rosewood are two main materials in traditional mahogany furniture, and they are like twin sisters who make mahogany furniture. Many rosewood with interwoven textures and clear and beautiful stripes are different from Huanghua pear, but their structures are very similar to those of sour branches. If we compare them more deeply, we can further distinguish them from the changes of wood texture.
