Mencius' theory of good nature has been appraised by different parties since ancient times. Mencius' argument for the goodness of human nature is to infer from some common experience that everyone has a natural goodness. This feeling is completely self-intuition, and it is a natural self-mind without thinking. On the surface, argument seems reasonable, but in fact it contains jumps that are not allowed logically, so it is a transcendental argument method. Mencius could not get rid of the traditional way of thinking of the ancients, and pushed the problem of unclear theory to the sky, which was obviously reflected in the source of the four tails. A natural morality can easily avoid the need to show it. Mencius overemphasized people's moral rationality and belittled people's perceptual needs. Although he vaguely saw the duality of human nature, he overemphasized people's moral attributes and gave the initiative to be good to people themselves. There is no alternative but a high degree of self-discipline. Mencius neglected that moral self-discipline should be based on a strong spiritual backing. Once the final judgment of moral behavior becomes human, this kind of self-discipline will often become conditional self-discipline, and the standard of judgment will become blurred. This is why all the sages in China are talking about morality, and children's enlightenment education is also the beginning of life. Human nature is good, but the moral field is the most prone to problems since ancient times. The assertion that human nature is good stands tall in front of China people like a mountain. People don't need to think about where the mountain comes from, just how to get there. Therefore, people often do not make factual judgments, but only make value judgments, without asking whether it is right or not, and do not base value judgments on factual judgments, resulting in value judgments becoming passive water and trees without roots. On the other hand, Mencius' theory of "goodness of human nature" still stands in the spiritual world of China people after thousands of years of ups and downs, and shines with the changes of the times, so it must have its reasons and values.
The insights in the theory of good nature have broken through the limitation of time and space, and have been given new connotations and new interpretations in the new era. On the basis of human nature, Mencius put forward the principles of loyalty, filial piety, faith, respect, love, benevolence and morality, arguing that as long as everyone can achieve and adhere to these codes of conduct, society will be harmonious and the country will be well governed. Therefore, Mencius raised the question of how to build a harmonious society from the perspective of the theory of good nature. Each of us is the carrier of Chinese culture and the subject of Chinese cultural inheritance, and everyone's words and deeds show a nation's spiritual choice. We need to internalize the socialist concept of honor and disgrace into our own moral consciousness, improve ourselves, pursue justice, shape a new personality under the conditions of socialist market economy, carry forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation, and inject the characteristics of the times into traditional theoretical thinking. This is also the main purpose of studying Mencius' theory of good nature today.
