Walking Dumplings on the Yangtze River: Is there really a shape of lightning, thunder, storm and python churning?

The Yangtze River water transport runs through the east and west of China, and the area where the Yangtze River flows has been a frequent area of natural disasters such as landslides, mudslides and floods since ancient times. However, this phenomenon is often classified as "eating jiaozi" by the people, and there is often a saying that "eating a big jiaozi in the river and entering the sea is a dragon".

Unofficial history's Miscellaneous Notes since the Song and Yuan Dynasties are often associated with Jiao when talking about the floods at that time. Slowly, "walking dumpling" became synonymous with flood disaster. In the folk, whenever there is a flood, the common people often think that "Jiao" is at work.

Is there really a "jiaozi" in the world?

0 1 Rumor: There is a rumor along the Yangtze River that "we are going to jiaozi", with lightning and thunder, wind and rain, and python figures rolling.

The earliest record of "walking" was in 1866. According to legend, behind the Jingtu Temple in Kuangshan, Hubei Province, there was a sudden loud noise and a landslide, which turned out to be a flash flood. A huge monster came with the wave. It has a cow's head and a body like a python. Everywhere it went, houses and trees were destroyed.

1984 In July, a farmer broke corn in his field near Dongting Lake. After the rain stopped, he stirred up the corn. On his way home, he saw a "jiaozi" dish on the front ridge, about ten meters long and black. He was so scared that he didn't even want corn, so he crawled and rolled home.

1995, a villager went to the toilet in the middle of the night, and suddenly a flash of lightning flashed across the sky. The villagers saw a "jiaozi" moving at high speed in the air in the distance, as thick as a bucket! Later, it was confirmed that this was a python, which happened to hit the thunder while foraging, and was mistaken for "Jiao" soaring.

The most popular story about eating jiaozi should be "Eating jiaozi on the Yangtze River". It happened on 1998. At that time, there was a big flood. Many people saw a black slug swimming in the water, and the figure of a python was churning. After a flash of lightning, jiaozi disappeared. People said it was "turning jiaozi into a dragon", but it was later confirmed that the black object in the water was not jiaozi, but a big piece of wood.

The most mysterious thing is the sinking of the Eastern Star passenger ship. On June 1 day, 2005, on 2065438, the Oriental Star passenger ship was hit by a storm on its way to Chongqing, causing the passenger ship to sink rapidly. Some people think that this incident has something to do with "Walking jiaozi", and that the phenomena such as rainstorm, lightning and strong wind encountered at that time are similar to those described in the rumored "Walking jiaozi".

Form: Fishy and anticlimactic, with colorful limbs, Niu Jiao sounds like a donkey barking.

So, what kind of species is Jiao?

According to legend, "Jiao" usually lives in rivers and lakes, and the smaller "Jiao" will find a secluded deep pool to live in. Because Jiao is not a dragon, of course she can't fly, but she can only dive into the water.

The figure has the shape of a fish and a snake, which is what the ancient book says. It is also said that Jiao looks like the legendary dragon, but the angle of Jiao is very short, or even not, and there are protruding pieces of meat crossing between the eyes on the upper eyebrow. It also has four legs. In order to paddle, its front end is like a wide paddle and its tail tip has hard bones.

The body length is generally 2-5 meters, and the big one even exceeds 6 meters. Jiao has white patterns on her neck, blue patterns on her back, ochre on her chest and colorful limbs.

Its character is violent and aggressive, and its cry is very special, sometimes like Niu Jiao, sometimes like a donkey.

Based on what witnesses saw and heard, the author summed up the image of Jiao: Jiao is a mysterious creature formed by people taking crocodiles as the prototype and combining some characteristics of animals such as pythons, big fish and cattle.

History: There are many records about "Shangjiao" in ancient books, saying that it is a dragon to go to the sea with a big horn.

In folklore, "Jiao" is real, and they are also moved out of ancient books. From Xu Shen's Shuowen in the Eastern Jin Dynasty to Zu Chongzhi's Yi Shu Collection in the Southern Dynasties, there are many records about "Jiao".

According to them, after 500 years of practice, the snake has become a dragon, but it is not a dragon. It is only the last step away from the real dragon, that is, when it rains heavily, it swims along the river to the ocean with the help of heavy rain and flash floods, thus truly "turning the dragon". This process is called "taking jiaozi". "Good walking" has three characteristics:

First, "Walking jiaozi" has three key words: rainstorm, huge waves and lightning. "Walking jiaozi" happened between Shan Ye, accompanied by natural phenomena such as violent storms, lightning and thunder, flash floods, and river surges. With the help of water potential, "Jiao" will rush into mountains and rivers for further cultivation.

Second, "Jiao" is in a state of madness and irritability, and no one can stop it. It will split the river and rush downstream quickly. The strong impact produced in this process will cause huge waves and eddies, accompanied by serious disasters. Wherever it goes, bridges and fertile fields will be destroyed.

Third, when you meet a bridge, you must never walk under it. Instead, let the river overflow the stone bridge, and then the "jiaozi" will pass by the upstream of the bridge. If Jiao passes under the bridge, it's like being stepped on, and you'll never get through it.

Cause: "Jiao" is originally a non-existent species, and it is definitely not "Jiao" who walks with "Jiao".

In fact, no one has really seen the mysterious species Jiao, and there is no evidence to prove that it is true. The reason why people spread it so well is mainly because it is a product of folk customs, which will inevitably be exaggerated or imagined out of thin air.

It can be seen that Jiao was originally a non-existent species, but it just contained the mentality of the ancients to know nature, which also proved the ancients' awe of nature.

Of course, walking is definitely not "jiao". People often associate "coke" with natural disasters such as floods. It can be seen that the ancients had to attribute natural disasters to "coke" because they did not understand the formation principle of heavy rain.

When the rainy season comes, if there is too much water in the river, it will naturally spread downstream and flood, thus causing floods. At that time, people didn't quite understand this phenomenon, and thought it should be the "jiaozi" in the river, and it was the process that they walked into the sea along the river that caused the flood.

It can be seen that rumors such as Yangtze River Dumpling, Python Du Jie and Serpent Dragon are all influenced by natural phenomena, which, together with the embellishment of folk rumors, form a seemingly mysterious and bizarre story. Let's take these legends as stories.

Prototype: It may be a python, a shark, or a tree, but it is not excluded that it is made up of a variety of animals.

Since they are superstitious ideas and conspiracy theories, the phenomenon of "going to jiaozi" can be found everywhere on the Internet. Then, this nature also has a prototype, otherwise the people will not say that the wind is rain. So, what exactly do people see?

The first theory may be that the trees washed down by the rainstorm are 10 to 20 meters long and the buckets are thick. Because wood is lighter than water, it floats down the river. Seen from a distance, it floats around like the legendary "jiaozi".

Second, many scholars believe that the dumpling in the water is obviously a crocodile. In Shi Shuo Xin Yu written by Liu Yiqing in the Southern Dynasties, there is a story that jiaozi was cut back after entering the water for three days and three nights at the beginning of the week, in which the dragon described was considered as a crocodile. Moreover, according to the data, there were bay crocodiles living in ancient South China, with a body length of 5 meters.

In the third way, some people think that Jiao is actually a python. Whenever encountering mountain torrents or mudslides, the living environment of pythons will be destroyed by floods and washed into the water. The giant python churned in the flood, accompanied by lightning and thunder, and was seen, which became what the people called "walking dumpling".

Common pythons are 3-5 meters long, inhabit tropical and subtropical low mountain jungles and can also live in water for a long time. Judging from the shape and habits of pythons, it is also very similar to the rumored "dragon".

Fourthly, according to the China Science Journal, some scholars believe that Jiao's prototype may be a python, lizard or shark. It is not excluded that coke is also made up of a variety of prototypes, combined with the characteristics of pythons, crocodiles, cattle, sharks, monitor lizards and other animals. At present, this statement is quite reliable.

Conclusion: It is not a dragon in the water, but a natural disaster.

From the perspective of natural science, "walking dumpling" is a natural disaster formed by the superposition of various natural disasters, rather than a "dumpling" that turns into a dragon when it meets water. We should understand all kinds of natural phenomena with a scientific attitude, instead of blindly superstitious and unscientific ways to deconstruct natural phenomena.
