Since many people can’t understand cursive writing, why was cursive writing invented?

Things are rare and valuable, and the same is true for art. If it is something that the public can understand, it cannot be called art. And not just cursive script, but also small seal script, official script, and running script, etc., we laymen can only see the shape, but people who really learn calligraphy pay a lot more attention to it. They look at different levels of calligraphy. Therefore, there are many things that we cannot understand, but they all have their own value and meaning.

There is a sequence of learning, and there is a specialization in the art. Everyone learns different things, and their areas of knowledge are naturally different. For an employee who is studying machine repair and has never been exposed to calligraphy, if you ask him to appreciate calligraphy, he will definitely not be able to appreciate it, just like a layman like us who cannot understand it. But if you ask calligraphers to repair the machine, they will not be able to repair it. As a layman, it is definitely impossible to repair it, so does the matter of repairing machines have no value in existence? Of course not. Some things are important to some people, but have little meaning to some people, so there is nothing that is not worth inventing or existing.

Cursive script was formed in the Han Dynasty. For the simplified characters we use now, cursive script may be very difficult and cumbersome, but for traditional traditional characters in the past, cursive writing is faster than those traditional characters. So much so that some kings liked to write memorials in cursive script. Therefore, the invention of cursive script was still meaningful at that time. There have been many cursive calligraphers in history. Representatives include Zhang Xu, Huai Su and others. From ancient times to the present, there must be many people who love it. Although cursive script can no longer be used for daily writing, it still has the charm and cultural heritage it has accumulated over the years.
