Why don’t designers want to be called artists?

In the traditional sense, artists only work to beautify the appearance and modify the layout. Today's designers have an obvious impact on the design of commercial products and corporate images. Therefore, calling a designer an artist sounds a bit derogatory to the designer’s work and contribution, and people naturally don’t like to hear it.

In the same way, programmers can call themselves "coders", but if other people who are not "coders" call themselves that, they will get angry. In Zootopia, when Officer Leopard met Judy for the first time, he called her cute. Judy was a little embarrassed and said that rabbits can be called cute, but other animals would be embarrassed if they called rabbits cute. For example: dead ghost, nigger...sometimes they are very affectionate names or self-proclaimed names, but sometimes, they are not...

Some people like to call designers artists because they do not understand design and do not understand design. I have encountered many artists and people pretending to be designers, an instinctive mentality. The first two points are easy to understand, let’s mainly analyze the third point.

People have a very strange habit. For some unfamiliar areas, things in this area will be simplified. For example, describe a photographer as someone who takes pictures, a calligrapher as someone who writes, an athlete as someone who runs, a painter as someone who draws, a fashion designer as someone who is a tailor...

Put a person "Simplifying" a person's career is disrespectful to others, and it also reveals a message: they don't understand this industry, and they have a strong prejudice against the fields they don't understand. When many designers hear the word art, they can only smile bitterly and express helplessness, because they cannot ask laypeople to understand areas that they do not understand.

The work of an artist is quantitative, while the work of a designer is qualitative. What does the work of an artist mean: cutting pictures in batches, applying templates in batches, and deducting pictures in large quantities. Guaranteed time does not guarantee quality. This group of people can do mass fraud. The most important thing is that this job is thoughtless in the eyes of many people.

Designers are different, they are a group of people who are recognized as having design ideas. Have the right to think for yourself, the ability to influence customer aesthetics, and be responsible for the brand image. A true designer will naturally make people respect him with his work. I don’t want to be called an artist because I feel that my work has not received enough respect and praise.
