Linchi Guanjian tied ropes to rule in the previous life. Since Fuxi drew the Eight Diagrams, the writing has flourished. Therefore, when ancient people wrote calligraphy, they called it calligraphy and painting. Draw, divide, and limit. "Erya Shiqiu": "The road goes out to the right and returns to it, painting Qiu." Note: It was planned by Tao. "Explanation of Names": "To tell the right side, it is called painting Qiu. People stick to the right side, and when there is finger painting, they always stick to the right side." Therefore, use the right hand to draw characters. Whether it is seal script, official script, regular script, running script, or cursive script, you should never forget the meaning of the calligraphy, whether it is horizontal, vertical, wave, hem, hook, or crotch, and you should always abide by the method of drawing characters.

In the cover paintings, the brushes are always straight and the brushes are always round, and the characters are ever-changing, and the craftsmanship is extremely skillful. Later generations did not call it painting, but called it writing. Writing has two meanings: "Shuowen": "Writing means placing things." "Yunshu": "Writing means losing." "Writing" means the shape of things; "Losing" means losing my heart. The two meanings are not contradictory, so the words are drawn from the heart. If I can only place the shape of things but cannot convey my heart, then the meaning of drawing and writing will be lost. No wonder calligraphy fails.

Calligraphy and painting come from the same work. The words are expensive to write, and the paintings are also expensive to write. If calligraphy is incorporated into paintings, the paintings will be wonderful; if painting methods are incorporated into books, the books will be wonderful. Therefore, it is said: Those who are good at calligraphy must be good at painting; those who are good at painting must also be good at calligraphy. Those who are good at both calligraphy and painting include Mi Xiangyang, Ni Yunlin, Zhao Songxue, Shen Shitian, Wenhengshan, and Dong Sibai.
