Huang Donglei’s personal experience

Huang Donglei, born in 1966, is known as the Prince of Ancient Painting. After nearly thirty years of hard training, Huang Donglei began to study Mao calligraphy in 2006 with reverence and love for the great man. Calligraphy was formed in the 1960s. It is a unique calligraphy style that combines the expertise of various ancient calligraphers and absorbs the essence of Chinese cursive script. Huang Donglei first learned Mao-style running script. The fonts are bold and vigorous, highlighting the characteristics of horizontal drawings tilting to the upper right and vertical drawings tilting to the lower left. The characters are vertically slanted and towering, with a unique sense of form, embodying conscious aesthetic taste. There are two types of calligraphy in the original Mao calligraphy that are mainly written on the spot: one is the cursive calligraphy used for everyday writing, which contains cursive techniques in a casual way and is mostly seen on letterheads. These letterheads no longer use the regular script of Jin and Tang dynasties and the writing methods of Wei stele, and the style of Mao-style running script has been formed. The other type is running script with strong and powerful strokes, horizontal and vertical strokes, which are mostly seen in inscriptions.

In the summer of 2008, Huang Donglei’s interest in calligraphy and his goal of exploring calligraphy turned to running cursive and wild cursive. The national selection event for Mao calligraphers is a symbol of the evolution of Huang Donglei's calligraphy from cursive style to wild cursive style. The font is thin and the stippling is like gossamer, but it has strong connotation and is elegant and majestic. The representative work of Huang Donglei's calligraphy is the long Mao calligraphy scroll "22 Meters of Wild Grass". The outstanding feature of the long scroll works is Kuangcao, also known as "big grass". When written, dragons and phoenixes are dancing, free and easy, which gives people a strong shock. Almost every picture in the long scroll has its own characteristics. Some words are written with heavy ink and the key points are highlighted; some words are deliberately tilted to form characteristics; some words shake to echo each other and the pen breaks the meaning; some words are like dragons and snakes flying in the air. Not good. Huang Donglei's calligraphy is both powerful and beautiful. If you are not a professional calligrapher, it will be difficult to feel its true connotation. The expression of its fonts is super strong without losing its elegance, so it gives people a sense of beauty.

In addition to brush calligraphy, Huang Donglei also has some hard-pen calligraphy works. The original design drafts of Huang Donglei’s cursive works were all written with hard-pen. During his period of crazy cursive calligraphy creation, most of the hard-pen calligraphy expressed was cursive, and many hard-pen calligraphy works The work can be considered a masterpiece.

Through the study of Chinese calligraphy, Huang Donglei gently opened the window to his spiritual world and cultural life. His calligraphy style is similar to the ancients but different from the ancients. It is similar to his character, with a sense of galloping, romantic and heroic. It is like flowing clouds and flowing water, ever-changing. The magnanimity he expresses with his pen is rare.
