Five-finger writing and five-character writing in calligraphy
Five-finger writing is the basic method of modern writing, which can be explained by four words: "grasping, planing, hooking, checking and reaching", which is called "five-character writing". Simply put, the penholder is pressed outwards with the upper segment of thumb against the upper segment of index finger, the index finger holds the penholder obliquely downwards from the upper right outer side, and the upper segment of middle finger hooks the penholder hook inwards from the left outer side. When the fingernail is attached to the meat, hold the pen tube outward from the right side, hold the ring finger with the little finger as an auxiliary support, and hold the pen tube firmly with the five fingers Qi Li. Now the explanation of this basic writing is similar. However, it is necessary to know that the thumb and forefinger control the pen tube correspondingly, which is convenient for the middle finger and the ring finger to carry the pen. If you don't need to write big characters with your fingers, move your thumb down and hold the pen more stably. In the development of this basic writing method, some specific writing methods have been derived, such as "longan method", "phoenix eye method" and "goose head method". For these specific writing methods, some people who are not good at both, like those who are partial to food, always hold their own opinions and argue endlessly. We should regard these specific writing methods as their own wonderful uses, complementing each other, rather than mutually exclusive. For example, when writing with the "longan method", it is of course possible to push the pen tube to the fingertips of the thumb, forefinger and middle finger, so it is ok to write small characters below the inch, but it is not as effective as the "phoenix eye method" to write large characters. Another example is the "Goose Head Method" or "Wrist Back Method". Because it is not convenient to move fingers and wrists, the strokes written are relatively heavy and strong, but they are difficult to get rid of, smooth and beautiful. In addition, there are some common methods of holding the pen, such as "virtual palm moving fingers", "wrist flat palm vertical", "wrist hanging", "wrist back", "wrist moving", "elbow hanging" and "pinching tube". No matter when these methods of writing are formed, they are all effective methods of writing. Of course, we must also understand and master them when learning to write and carry a pen. What other methods, such as "wrist pillow method", "wrist dragging method" and "arm twisting method", need not be learned one by one, so that they can become shorter and longer.
In a word, the writing method has its objective law of development, and the specific writing method is the product of the development of writing method. We should use the attitude of historical materialism and dialectical methods to find out the historical situation from the development of brushwork, and find out the law of development and applicable writing methods. In this way, for us, the "secret" of brushwork is nothing more than scientific knowledge.
