The tulip is the national flower of which country?

Tulips are the national flowers of the Netherlands and Turkey.

Tulips are plants of the genus Tulipa in the Liliaceae family.

Tulip is a perennial herb. The bulb is conical in shape, about 2 to 3cm in diameter, covered with a light yellow to tan skin on the outside and 2 to 5 fleshy scales inside. The stems and leaves are smooth and whitely powdered. There are 3 to 5 leaves, band-like-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, with entire edges wavy, often hairy, and 2 to 3 of them are broad and basal. The flowers are solitary on the top of the stem, large, upright cup-shaped, magenta, bright yellow to purple-red, with dark purple spots at the base. There are 6 tepals, free, obovate-oblong, and the flowering period is from March to May. The capsule is dehiscent on the back and the seeds are flat.

Growing environment

Tulips are native to the Mediterranean coast, Central Asia, Turkey and other places. The unique Mediterranean climate has formed the characteristics of tulips adapting to wet and cold winters and dry and hot summers. It has the characteristics of dormancy in summer, rooting and sprouting in autumn and winter but not unearthing. It needs to start around early February of the next year after the low temperature in winter (the temperature is above 5℃). It grows to form stems and leaves, and blooms from March to April. The optimum temperature for growth and flowering is 15 to 20°C. Flower bud differentiation is carried out during the storage period when the stems and leaves turn yellow, the bulbs are dug out of the pot and placed in a cool outdoor space for the summer. The optimum temperature for differentiation is 20 to 25°C, and the maximum temperature should not exceed 28°C.

Tulips are long-day flowers that like to be sunny and sheltered from the wind. They have warm and humid winters and cool and dry summers. It can grow normally above 8℃ and can generally withstand low temperatures of minus 14℃. It has strong cold tolerance. If there is thick snow cover in severe cold areas, the bulbs can survive the winter in the open field. However, they are afraid of the heat. If summer comes early and midsummer is very hot, it will be difficult for the bulbs to survive the summer after dormancy. It requires slightly acidic sandy loam rich in humus, loose and fertile, and well-drained. Avoid alkaline soil and continuous cropping.
