Things to note when learning brush calligraphy for beginners

1. Before using a new pen, it must be soaked in water. (Note: The fact that our brushes have no glue does not mean that we do not need to soak the brush. Soaking the brush is not to remove the glue, but to activate the brush hair and fill up each hair, so that the entire brush hair can be integrated into one. Otherwise, using ink directly will easily cause problems such as lack of sharpness and split ends!) Use a tea cup or bottle, find a clip, and clamp the penholder to the edge of the cup, so that the pen hairs are suspended vertically in the water, and do not let the pen hairs stand on the bottom of the cup. , whether soaked in water or not, the bristles of the pen cannot be bent (except when writing). If the bristles of a new pen are bent when soaked for the first time, then the pen has failed, no matter how good the pen is.

2. It is best to soak in warm water in winter, but never hot. Hot water can easily burn the tip of the pen. Under normal circumstances, soaking in water for 10 to 20 minutes is enough.

3. After soaking, wipe off the water on the bristles of the pen. You can wipe it with a soft cloth, toilet paper, or raw rice paper. Be sure to rub along the hair. Don't wipe hard, and don't rub the pen bristles vigorously back and forth on the table in order to wipe away the water on the pen bristles. To be precise, it doesn't matter if there is some water left on the new pen.

4. After the water on the brush bristles has been wiped clean, start dipping the brush bristles into the ink. Be sure to dip all the brush bristles into the ink, not just half or more than half. Although we only use most of the pen hairs when writing, rather than using all of them, we must fill it up with ink when we first dip it in ink, so that the pen hairs can be connected together and the power can be used at the end of the pen when writing.

5. Every time you use the brush, you must rinse the bristles cleanly. Although it cannot be completely rinsed, at least there should not be too much residual ink. The cleaner the better, because shrinking ink will damage the pen.

6. After the brush is used up and the remaining ink is washed and dried, the bristles of the brush must be straightened and smoothed. The tip of the brush must be straight and not skewed. There must be no "curly" hairs or "out of touch". "Be sure to pack up the hair on the pen, tidy it up, and then hang the pen on the pen holder. If there is no pen holder, it can also be placed flat or inserted upside down in the pen holder.

7. When writing, if you don’t write for a short period of time, you can temporarily put on the pen cap to avoid the pen hairs being blown dry by the wind. But when you don't write for a long time, rinse the pen and let it dry naturally. Don't wear the pen cap again. The bristles of the pen cannot always be wet, especially residual wet ink, which will definitely damage the pen.

8. Due to the alternation of dryness and wetness, the pen barrel is easy to crack, and the pen tip sometimes falls off. Just use the current universal glue to stick it on. Compared with the workmanship and quality of the pen bristles, this is a trivial matter.

9. After using the pen for a long time, it feels uncomfortable to use it. In addition to normal natural wear and tear, sometimes residual ink sticks to the bristles of the pen, which is extremely difficult to wash off with water. At this time, You can use conditioner to clean the brush bristles. In most cases, a brush that has been cleaned with conditioner is easy to use. What we should know is that pen hair is also animal hair.

10. "If you want to do your job well, you must first sharpen your tool." We should treat the brush well and cherish it, especially it is not easy to get a good brush, so we must protect it. Sometimes, it’s not that the pen is hard to use, it’s that we don’t know how to use it or treat it well. The pen is like this, and the paper, ink, and inkstone are also like this.
