Research on Four Ancient Poems

Four Ancient Poems entered the Tibetan court from the Northern Song Dynasty and were included in Xuanhe Pu Shu. Appraised by famous scholars and collectors Xiang, Feng Fang and Dong Qichang in the Ming Dynasty, it was collected by the Qing Palace and collected in Shiqu Baodi. In the past 1000 years, there have been different opinions about its author. Xie Lingyun thought it was written in the Northern Song Dynasty, but it was later denied by Feng Fang. According to the artistic style of "Four Books of Classical Poetry", Dong Qichang initiated the theory of "Zhang Xu's Original Works", but it was still defined as "pseudo-Zhang Xu calligraphy" in "Shiqu Baodi" in Qianlong period. Because there is no other original cursive script handed down from ancient times in Zhang Xu for comparison, it has always been an unsolved case!

Contemporary calligraphy research circles also argue endlessly about its author. It is said to be an original of Zhang Xu, represented by the famous collector Yang. In the first issue of 1978 Calligraphy magazine, an article entitled "On Zhang Xu's Calligraphy Style and Four Poems" was published, and it was considered that Xu's original works were adopted by university textbooks and national books and periodicals. However, the famous collector and calligrapher Qi Gong disagreed with this statement. Among the manuscripts, Xu's cursive poems, the first of the fifty-sixth manuscripts, are considered to be works of the Northern Period.
