Wang Xizhi, a calligrapher in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was born in Linyi (now Shandong) and later moved to Huiji (now Shaoxing, Zhejiang). In his later years, he lived in seclusion in Jinting, Shan county, and served as secretary, general Ningyuan and Jiangzhou secretariat.

Liu Gongquan, Jing Ren, was a famous calligrapher in Tang Dynasty. His calligraphy was first learned from Wang Xizhi, and then from Yan Zhenqing and Ou Yangxun, forming a Liu style that was good at strengthening bones. Liu Gongquan is famous for his regular script. Later generations called Liu Gongquan and Yan Zhenqing "Yan Liu", and his works also had the reputation of "Yan Liu Jin Gu".
