The Legend of Bao Bichen

Bao Bichen was a native of Nanxi, Sichuan. In the Qing Dynasty, he served as a tutor in Yanyuan County, Sichuan and as an academic administrator in Zizhou. Bao Bichen was good at calligraphy in all styles, especially cursive calligraphy. His predecessor He Shaoji and his successors Zhao Xi and Yu Youren all highly praised his calligraphy skills. But at that time, there were also some conservative people who couldn't stand "Bao Ti" and even called "Bao Ti" a "character demon". Regarding the legend of "Zi Yao", Mr. Hou Kaijia, a modern man, once gave a vivid account. He wrote: "Where did Bao Bi's reputation as a 'monster' come from? The author has interviewed many people. Some people said that the Empress Dowager Cixi saw Bao Bichen's calligraphy and said that it was simply a 'monster'; some said Zeng Hanlin (Bi Guang), who taught Bao Bichen how to write when he was a child, was dissatisfied with Bao's style and said that Bao Bichen's writing became "Zi Demon"; some people say that he learned the "Bao style" calligraphy when he was in Zizhou. There were too many people, which aroused the dissatisfaction of the Sichuan academic administration at that time. They thought that this kind of character could confuse people and was simply a 'character demon'! It is impossible to find out where the 'character demon' came from, but the author asked anyone who was familiar with Bao Bi Everyone knows that Bao Bichen has a reputation as a "word monster".
