What does poetry, calligraphy and painting mean?

Poetry, calligraphy and painting is a combined word, which refers to four kinds of knowledge and skills that ancient literati must have, including poetry, literature, calligraphy and painting.

Poetry and literature are expressions of language, while calligraphy and painting are expressions of art. In ancient times, these four skills were considered to be the basic skills necessary for a scholar, as well as the basic qualities necessary for imperial examinations and being an official. Among them, poetry mainly examines the literati's cultural accomplishment, language expression and literary creation ability, while painting and calligraphy mainly examines the literati's aesthetic ability and artistic accomplishment.
