On November 23, 2019, Mr. Liushahe passed away.
Liushahe, whose real name is Yu Xuntan, was born in Chengdu in 1931 and his hometown is Jintang, Sichuan. Modern Chinese poet, writer, scholar and calligrapher. His major works include "Collection of Poems by Liushahe", "Farewell to My Hometown", "Travel", "Twelve Families of Taiwanese Poets", "Poetry Across the Sea", "Twelve Families of Middle-aged Taiwanese Poets", "Poetry Talk by Liushahe", "Records of Saw Tooth Marks", " "Modern Edition of Zhuangzi", "Essays of Liushahe", "Quotations of Mr. Y", "Short Essays of Liushahe", "Recent Works of Liushahe", etc.
Mr. Liushahe was born in the Yu family in Jintang County, Chengdu. Going back to his generation, the four generations of the Yu family were all scholars. There are 30 plaques hanging everywhere in the yard of the Yu family in Jintang County. Liushahe once said: "30 Dao! You are so surprised - when I was a little baby, I saw so many classical Chinese texts. How lucky I was!"
However, there is more to "lucky" Xuntan did not become a good student as people thought. When he was in elementary school, he liked handicrafts, such as cutting bamboo strips, making kites, weaving birdcages, and catching crickets. He liked to play with too many things, so he delayed his homework and actually repeated the grade three times. But his parents didn't care about their child's "lack of progress" and laughed it off. Mr. Liushahe said, "They never supervise my homework or exert pressure."
Mr. Liushahe's experience can be told from the perspective of family education and psychology. Lots of points. I just want to say one thing here, and that is the power of influence.
I once read an article saying that in the late 1990s, the U.S. Department of Education tracked the academic progress of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to fifth grade and found several findings related to One of the factors that are highly related to children's academic performance is that there are many books at home. A very similar factor - listening to parents read every day, has almost no relationship with grades.
Very interesting research conclusion.
The large collection of books at home shows that the parents of the family, and even the parents’ parents, like reading. Books have become a part of the family and a part of daily life. Reading, in this family, is as common but indispensable as breathing, eating and drinking.
In such a family, even if parents do not explicitly require their children to read books every day, children who live in an environment of books every day will spontaneously and consciously come into contact with books, read like their parents, and be influenced by books. Feed.
And if reading is regarded as a utilitarian purpose, and parents themselves do not like reading very much, but only buy books and read for their children in order to let their children read more, reading is just a task for the children. Or one program per day. This kind of non-spontaneous and conscious input only looks good in form, but the actual effect is far from being as good as imagined.
Therefore, even though Mr. Liushahe repeated a grade three times, he eventually became a famous litterateur. This deep-rooted love for literature may remain dormant for a while, but one day it will sprout, grow, bloom, and bear fruit. This is the power of exposure.
Therefore, if you want your children to develop the good habit of loving books and learning, let’s start with the parents themselves. When parents make these good habits a natural thing for themselves, children are easily influenced by their parents and naturally develop these good habits.
