Cursive brushstrokes

Talking about the brush gesture of cursive script

Wen/Wang Demin

The so-called brush gesture refers to the movement of the pen on the paper when writing and stippling. Whether a calligraphy work is vivid, radiant and artistic charm depends on whether the brush gesture moves to take care of and connect with each other, or whether the pen is broken and connected, or whether it is implicit. This is especially important in cursive script. The reason why ancient and modern calligraphers attach importance to the use of strokes is that the following is intended to make some analysis on the use of strokes of cursive script:

First, Lian Bi's cursive script is relatively fast, and there are naturally hooks and ties between stipplings. The emergence of hooks makes stipplings echo each other, such as the word "not old", and the word "not old" is reversed with the word "old". Another example is the word "Spring and Autumn", in which the last stroke of the upper word is connected with the first stroke of the lower word, and the short withdrawal of the first stroke of the word "Autumn" is taken advantage of to make it natural and legal, resulting in the interest of "the combination of form and singularity, number and meaning". However, in practice, we should pay attention to one thing. Occasionally, it can enrich the sense of blood in stippling. If it is used too much, it will give people a sense of continuous winding and dazzling.

Second, reviewing the momentum

Cai Yong's Nine Moments said: "When the momentum comes to Fukashi, it will be unstoppable." This is how the pulse of cursive works is formed. Generally speaking, the stroke is always moving forward or downward, but if we properly "stop" it in the flowing stroke, we will also have unexpected interest. For example, the last word "song" in the first line of Song Ke's "Tang Dynasty cursive poem volume" just uses the last pen to rise to the bait, and reviews the above six words, which makes the whole stroke more meaningful. The action of closing one's arm is to punch out more quickly and forcefully. This method, which is long and short, is used more in hard writing and cursive writing. For example, the words "spring", "desire" and "person" in Su Shi's running script "Spring River wants to rain at home" have all turned into contraction, making the running script of this line more fluent, and the generation of one-word stroke.

4. Breaking the potential with points

Breaking the potential with points is similar to "convergence and gaining momentum", and cursive works have the beauty of smooth and round turn. If we are sharp-edged and smooth when writing a book, it will appear in a glance. If you add a little to some words in your work properly, it will have the magical effect of stopping the pen gesture. If the word "God" is added to the hanging needle, it has the meaning of Li Taibai's poem "but since water still flows, though we cut it with our swords". Another example is Huang Tingjian's "All Seated Posts", in which many points are inserted in a different way, one east and one west, which are not related to each other, making the sharp and unprecedented pen gesture stop constantly. Like a symphony composed of dots and lines, it is beautiful.

v. lateral change potential

The stroke potential caused by the lateral change of the structure is also called "body potential". In some books, we find that there is no obvious echo relationship between some pointillism and words, but the font changes sideways and comes into being with reflection. For example, the word "tolerance and pity" stretches left and shrinks right; "Right, sound" shrinks left and extends right; "servant, shooting" pitching posture.

In a word, the brushstrokes are ever-changing, and we must carefully ponder over them when learning books. Over time, we have a strange gas disk in our chest, and when we start writing, we can create freely cursive works.
