The four scholars of the Su family are Huang Tingjian, Qin Guan, Chao Buzhi and Zhang Lei. They all came from Su Shi's sect. The first four people to be publicized together were Su Shi himself.
The four last bachelors of the Su family are Li Gefei, Liao Zhengyi, Li Xi and Dong Rong in the Song Dynasty. Following the four Sumen scholars Huang Tingjian, Qin Guan, Chao Buzhi and Zhang Lei.
The six scholars of Sumen are Qin Guan, Huang Tingjian, Chao Buzhi, Zhang Lei, Chen Shidao and Li Lao. The Sixth Bachelor of Su Clan is in addition to the Four Bachelors of Su Clan, plus Chen Shidao and Li Lao. The "Four Scholars" refer to Huang Tingjian, Qin Guan, Chao Buzhi, and Zhang Lei. Some people also call them the Six Gentlemen of Sumen.

The origin of the Six Scholars of Sumen: In the first year of Yuanyou (1086), he began to serve as Yushi Zhongcheng. In the following year, he was promoted to Shangshu Youcheng. He was implicated in the Wutai Poetry Case. Several of Su Shi's friends who were exiled to the south are now in important positions in government, including Wang Shen, Wang Gong, etc. His old friend Chen from Huangzhou also came to the capital to visit him.
Huang Tingjian, who corresponded with Su Shi a few years ago, also came to see Su Shi and officially became his disciple. Over the years, Su Shi had repeatedly praised the four scholars in his letters, which greatly improved their reputation. It is generally accepted that Huang Tingjian , Qin Guan, Zhang Lei, and Chao Buzhi were the four scholars of the Su family. Later, Li Luo and Chen Shidao were added to become the six scholars of the Su family.
