However, Du has four little-known aspects. First of all, Du attaches great importance to his own cultural accomplishment.

When Du was a child, his family was very poor. Although the monthly tuition fee is only fifty cents, his mother can't pay the tuition fee for him, so he has to drop out of school. It is also the painful experience of this out-of-school child that makes him strive to improve his cultural literacy after becoming famous. In his home, there has always been a couplet: "Make friends with people in the world and read ancient books" to constantly urge himself to make progress. In addition, he also hired many storytellers to tell him about Four Great Classical Novels for a long time and learn about history and the ways of the ancients. He is also diligent in practicing calligraphy, and his handwriting is quite good. After a long period of cultural influence, he also began to pay attention to his appearance, manners and so on.
There have been rumors in the Jianghu that Du is a "monster" with blue face and fangs, but in fact, after getting along with him, I realized that he is a handsome "romantic gentleman".

Second, he attaches great importance to children's education. He knew that he wanted to study when he was a child, but his family was poor and he didn't have this condition. But it's different now. Now that he has this ability, he can't neglect his children's studies. He must make them study hard. On one occasion, his son Du gave up an exam. When Du learned about it, he gave Du Yi a slap in the face. Du Meiru, his daughter, failed in a foreign language exam. He beat her with a whip for more than ten times. It seems wrong to physically punish children now, but this kind of fatherly love that hates iron and does not produce is beyond words. It is worth mentioning that he also founded a middle school in the French Concession and hired Chen Qun as the principal. In addition, he also spent 10 million yuan to build the "Pudong Du Library" in his hometown of Pudong. As for other educational buildings, I won't elaborate on them one by one.
Thirdly, in the complicated and changeable historical environment at that time, Du did not forget his China identity. After the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War, Du participated in the Shanghai Anti-Japanese Support Association from all walks of life, and served as a member of the presidium and director of the fundraising committee. During his tenure, he raised 1.5 million yuan to save the nation. In addition, he also raised a large number of military materials to support the Anti-Japanese War. In addition, Du Yuesheng directly participated in some military operations. Later, after the fall of Shanghai, Chiang Kai-shek put forward a plan to block the Yangtze River in order to prevent the Japanese navy from invading Jiangxi on a large scale. Du took care of the overall situation and took the lead in instructing his big shipping company to keep a few ships sinking on the river. Under the guidance of Du, other shipping companies also responded, sinking ships into the river, blocking the Yangtze River waterway and delaying the Japanese attack.

Fourth, Du looked down on money. Of course, this has nothing to do with his wealth, but mainly with his personal character. Because a person's view of money often does not depend on how much money he has. Of course, it depends on one's idea. In his later years, when Du borrowed money, he took out a lot of other people's IOUs, burned them all, and told his children not to recover the remaining debts. But don't think that these people owe less. You know, Wang Xinheng alone owes him 500 pieces of "large yellow croaker" (gold bars). Therefore, when Du died, he only left us 65,438+million in cash. Before he died, he said, "I'm hopeless, but you still have hope, and China still has hope."
A few big characters on Du Cemetery
195 1 year, Du died in Hongkong, and his body was transported back to Taiwan Province for burial by his wife. 1952 10, under the selection of his wife and children, was finally buried at the foot of Dajian Mountain in Xizhi Town, Taipei County (now Xizhi District, New Taipei City). There is also an inscription by Chiang Kai-shek, "Yi Jie Zhao Yu", and an inscription by Zhang Qun, "Yu Wen Zhang Yong". Beside his grave, his wife Yao Guxiang is his companion.
However, it is hard to understand that sweeping graves is a matter for children and their descendants. However, when Du died, he only left his children100,000 yuan, but it was not enough. Children had to run around for their own lives, so naturally they rarely took care of his cemetery. But there was an old man who undertook the task of sweeping Du's grave for three years. The old man's name is Li Kaiming. When I passed Du Cemetery in my early years, I saw weeds reborn and destroyed. Coupled with his understanding of Du himself, a man of the hour who once dominated Shanghai became like this after his death, so the old man undertook the task of sweeping the grave. The weeds in Du cemetery have not only been cleaned up, but also some flowers and plants have been planted around it, which looks very lively. It is precisely because of the old man's "willingness" to pay that Du Cemetery will not be ruined and desolate!
