It is one of the famous gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. The predecessor of Yan Jia Garden was the residence of Shen Deqian, a famous Suzhou scholar and editor of Ancient Poetry Source during the Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty.

In the eighth year of Daoguang (A.D. 1828), Shen Shi's descendants gave money to Mudu poets. Named "Duanyuan". Money heaps stones to drain pools, pavilions to build buildings, bookstores with friends, overlooking the farmhouse building and Yanqing Pavilion, winning repeatedly. Gong Zizhen has some beautiful words about this garden, such as "the wonderful structure is very natural, and the meaning is not artificial" and "leaning on the stone is like a beauty".

In the 28th year of Guangxu (A.D. 1902), Yan, the richest man in Mudu (the grandfather of a politician in Taiwan Province Province) bought the Xiayuan Garden, which was renamed "Fairy Garden" after renovation.

Yan Jia Garden, formerly known as Xianyuan Garden, is the largest private garden in Mudu, and it is named "Yan Jia" because of its strict owner. The most famous descendant of the Yan family is Yan Jiagan, the leader of Taiwan Province Province after Chiang Kai-shek.
