Are there any tricks to collect famous paintings?

I have no experience in this field, and I have never collected celebrity calligraphy and painting. But I like arty. I not only like writing and drawing, but also collect dozens of works by not very famous painters. It feels particularly good to take it out and look through it occasionally. I'm going to tidy it up when I have time after retirement. I'm going to frame it, and it's time for them to hang it up for display.

Having said so many digressions, I just want to express one meaning. Three problems should be paid attention to when collecting celebrity calligraphy and painting:

First, don't just look at the author's fame. Calligraphy and painting have the same origin since ancient times. Calligraphers, like painters, have celebrities in every era, but celebrities in calligraphy and painting do not mean that they can create immortal works. It's like a pop singer. He may be very popular at a certain stage, but his works will disappear after he becomes popular or he dies. Such works have no collection value.

Now there are many big bosses in the society who like to collect celebrity calligraphy and painting. No matter what the content of the work is, as long as it is famous, it will be collected on a large scale. In fact, many of them will become garbage in the future.

Second, don't collect things you don't like. Although it is more for appreciation, it is often for pleasing the eye and collecting good things, especially works that meet one's aesthetic taste. Every appreciation will bring you a sense of pleasure.

Therefore, the collection of celebrity calligraphy and painting should be based on your own hobbies, and don't collect things you don't like.

Third, don't collect it indiscriminately. It's just that some big bosses just accept it because they have money. In fact, many people pay a good price to collect fakes, which is not worth the loss.

It is best to collect celebrity calligraphy and painting in person, and it is better if there are real photos created by the author. If you want to collect famous paintings, you must understand many characteristics. You must be familiar with all the famous paintings of painters, the painting characteristics of each era, and the characteristics of pens commonly used by painters. If it is Chinese painting, you should study the characteristics of his calligraphy, common signatures and seals, and have physical samples to compare. You not only want to look back at calligraphy and painting, but also have a certain level of ability in calligraphy and painting seal cutting. To learn ancient paintings, we must also understand the characteristics of the times of pens, ink and paper commonly used by painters, and recognize and identify professional knowledge.
