Official script is the product of long-term changes and development of ancient characters. It further breaks through the constraints of pictograms and becomes abstract, expanding the changes in pen usage and the spatial arrangement of character structures in calligraphy. About the study of official script
Han Shaohui
Since the new era, many revolutions have taken place in the calligraphy world. In terms of creation, the cursive script revolution has accumulated the most abundant achievements and its results have become more prominent, but the progress of official script has been slow. Although the standard official script pattern of "Silkworm Head Swallowtail" is generally abandoned, the writing is still fancy, trivial and weak. At that time, there was a person named Cheng Changgeng in the Peking Opera circle. In his later years, he said to Tan Xinpei: "But the son's voice is too sweet, almost soft and soft, and it sounds like the sound of national subjugation." After I die, my son will be alone, but I fear that China will never be great again. What's the matter! What's the matter!? What he said unexpectedly reflects the creation of contemporary official script.
Cultural phenomena are a reflection of social spirit. Era like the Qin, Han and Qing dynasties will inevitably produce vigorous, strong, and clumsy calligraphy styles. The proliferation of fast food culture and lack of faith will inevitably lead to impetuousness and weakness. The wind is popular. Reflected in the field of calligraphy, it will inevitably lead to works that are trivial, pretentious, and artificial, with gorgeous form but empty content. As for the shortcomings caused by the author's own eagerness for quick success, such as piecing together, collecting words, copying, and learning from others, there are even more.
Quick success will lead to quick decay!
I admire Liu Xizai’s theory of “high, big, deep” in official script creation: it is high when you can’t spit it out, it is high when you can’t spit it out. It is called big when it cannot be contained, and it is deep when it is so twisty that people cannot twist it. Only high realm, great atmosphere and deep meaning are the characteristics of official script.
I admire Fu Shan’s “Four Nings and Four Don’ts” theory on the aesthetics of official script: It is better to be clumsy than cunning, to be ugly rather than charming, to be detached rather than slippery, and to be sincere and frank rather than arranged. Contemporary official script overemphasizes aesthetics, interest and decorative design, which is exactly contrary to the aesthetics of official script dominated by Shen Xiong and strength. If you want to become a master, if you want to stand in the book world for a long time, you must sweep away the staleness and appear sincere, simple, generous and powerful. Chao Gai in "Water Margin" is a rogue and rogue, but he has an imperial air and great beauty.
In the study of official script, I advocate building the foundation of Han steles, seal scripts to strengthen bones, and bamboo slips and silks to be rich in charm. The foundation of Han Dynasty monuments and the rich charm of bamboo slips and silk have become the most common knowledge among those who practice officialdom. The key lies in whether they can get the bench or not, which will take ten years of hard work. Zhuan Xianggu is still in an unconscious or subconscious state and has not yet formed a conscious concept. The look of official script is ancient, simple, majestic and vigorous, and the line quality is strong, thick and lively, which cannot be achieved unless you are accustomed to seal script.
I was asked to write a short article on "Medicine for the Harm of Medical Lili" for "Chinese Calligraphy". After reading it today, it has already hit the mark. You might as well excerpt it here:
1. Qin and Han seal scripts should be taken daily, two hours a day, for two years; after one year, Shang and Zhou Jinwen can also be taken, 1-2 hours a day, continuously 1-2 years. The complexion can be rosy and the bones can be strong. This is a good medicine for nourishing yin, and those who practice Li must know it.
2. Choose one of the "Li Qi", "Yi Ying" and "Cao Quan" in Han Li and take it every day, two hours a day for two years, you can learn the method of Li; Choose one or two of "Zhang Qian", "Shimen", "Xijiao", "Hengfang", "Fenglongshan", etc., and take them for two hours a day for two years to get the meaning of the official script; then, "Guangwu" Choose one or two of them from "General", "Good King", Western Han Dynasty Engraved Stones, Qin Li, Jian and Silk Scripts, Folk Engraved Stones, etc., for two hours a day for several years, you can get the fun of official script. In this way, from the method, meaning and interest, we can achieve the true origin and purity, and get the taste of official script that is broad, big, majestic, clumsy, strong, strange, high and profound. This is a good medicine for aphrodisiac, and those who practice Li should not know it.
3. Philosophy, aesthetics, and literature should be chosen based on your own physical needs. Take it every day and read it on the toilet, on your pillow, or in the car. Take 1-2 hours a day and take it for life without interruption.
Only by reading can one understand the truth; only by understanding things clearly can one penetrate the wood three-thirds; only by penetrating the wood three-thirds can one explore the origins and laws that others cannot. In this way, the works will naturally have profound expression, unique appearance, high taste and profound meaning. This is a great tonic medicine for nourishing yin and strengthening yang, which is a must-know for those practicing Li.
This prescription, which is not recommended by doctors, is beneficial, so you might as well give it a try.
