Cai Yong was proficient in temperament and brilliant, and studied under the famous scholar Hu Guang. Cai Yong is good at seal script and official script, but he is not good at literary works such as General Classics and General History, Ci and Fu. Li Shu, in particular, has the deepest attainments and the highest reputation, and has the evaluation of "Cai Yong's book is vigorous and refreshing". Creating "Feibai" calligraphy style has a great influence on later generations. Comment on Zhang Huaiguan's Narration and Cai Yong's Bofei Book in Tang Dynasty: "Wonderful".
Cai Yong's seal script and official script, especially official script, are well-known. Their word structure is neat, stippling and pitching, and their styles are changeable. Emperor Ling ordered workers to repair the Hongdu Department (known as Hongdu in the Eastern Han Dynasty, where imperial books were collected), and craftsmen used brooms to sweep white powder to write on the wall. Cai Yong was inspired by this and created the Book of Flying Whites. This style of writing, as if written with a dry pen, is a unique style of writing, which has a great influence on later generations. Commenting on Cai Yong's The Book of Flying Whites, Zhang Tang said, "Flying Whites is wonderful.".
(There really was no calligrapher named Cai in the Western Han Dynasty)
