Master Haideng (1902~1989)
Master Haideng’s surname was Fan and his given name was Wubing. He was born in Jiangyou County, Sichuan Province in 1902 AD (the 20th year of Emperor Guangxu’s reign in the Qing Dynasty). Eight years) was born.
Master Haideng, whose real name is Fan Wubing, was smart and studious since childhood, and loved literature and martial arts. At the age of 19, he was admitted to the School of Liberal Arts of Sichuan University. Because of his poor family, he changed to the publicly funded Sichuan Provincial Police Supervisory School. While studying in Chengdu, he visited famous martial arts masters such as Zhi Hanzi, a Taoist from Shandong who traveled to Sichuan, and Rufeng, a monk from Songshan Shaolin Temple. From then on, he formed an indissoluble bond with martial arts, so much so that he finally gave up his studies and concentrated on practicing martial arts. In the spring of 1931, Wu Bing was tired of the hustle and bustle of the provincial capital. After being arranged by a friend, he came to Jing'an nunnery, six miles south of Xindu County.
Jingzheng Temple is the foot temple of Baoguang Temple. It was built in the Ming Dynasty and covers an area of ??more than 20 acres. On the central axis of this nunnery, there are Shanmen Hall, Tianwang Hall, Daxiong Hall, Guanyin Hall and Dingxiu Mountain. There are wing rooms on both sides and surrounded by forest gardens. The environment is quiet and beautiful.
Besides practicing martial arts despite being healthy, he also read, practiced calligraphy, composed and recited poems in the guest house in the east garden of the nunnery. He wrote in the poem "Hearing the Bell":
The clear shadow passes through the curtain and the moonlight is high, but my heart is not willing to miss a good night; the frequency of Pulao helps me to think deeply, and the dream returns to Si Ma Bridge.
At the same time, because Wu Yi lived in a temple for a long time and came into contact with monks, he also developed a strong interest in the philosophy in Buddhist scriptures, so he came up with the idea of ??becoming a monk. Elder Fotai originally planned to accept Wu Bing as his disciple, but he felt that he was old and had little knowledge and could not benefit Wu Bing more. While hesitating, he suddenly thought that the knowledgeable Master Zhiguang, the abbot of Zhaojue Temple in Chengdu, would be the most suitable master for Wu Bian. However, I also considered that Zhaojue Temple is a jungle in ten directions, not a temple for descendants. According to Buddhist rules, Master Zhiguang cannot accept disciples in Zhaojue Temple. Therefore, Fotai and Zhiguang discussed and decided to accept the disciple at Wuyue Palace in Chengdu.
One day in the late autumn of 1937, Elder Fotai hired two rickshaws to go to Chengdu from Xindu with Wu Bing. Wu Bing quit the rickshaw and insisted on walking. On the road, I saw Wu Bing running to Si Ma Bridge in one breath and throwing the rickshaw far away. When he arrived at the Wuyue Palace, Wu Bing asked the Buddhist elder to be the ceremonial guide. He went into the main hall to meet Master Zhiguang. The master gave Wu Bing a shaved head and taught him the "Three Refuges" and "Five Precepts", and gave him the Dharma name Hai Deng. In the early winter of the same year, Hai Deng went to Zhaojue Temple to receive the formal ordination from Master Zhiguang, and became a formal monk, calling himself the "Chang Jing Jin Monk". Soon, Hai Deng served as a Chinese teacher and martial arts teacher at Zhaojue Buddhist College. At that time, Baoguang Temple was a Buddhist Zen jungle as famous as Zhaojue Temple. The abbot of the temple, Guanyi, an old monk, was profound in Zen knowledge and highly respected. Before he became abbot, he was one of the "four leaders" of Baoguang Temple together with Elder Fotai. After he became abbot, Master Zhiguang and Master Nenghai, who was the vice president of the Chinese Buddhist Association, were his ordained disciples. Therefore, Master Haideng often came to Baoguang Temple to learn Zen from the old monk Guanyi before and after he became a monk, and he also taught martial arts to the monks of Baoguang Temple. Master Hai Deng has maintained close ties with Baoguang Temple for decades.
In 1945, Master Haideng traveled out of Sichuan, visited famous mountains and temples, and taught boxing and martial arts. The following year when he was traveling through the Songshan Shaolin Temple, he was hired as a martial arts professor by the abbot of the temple, Elder Deyi. After liberation, Master Hai Deng participated in some provincial, municipal and national martial arts competitions and performances many times, and also served as a martial arts coach at the Shanghai Sports Palace. While practicing martial arts, he insisted on studying Buddhism, medicine and literature. He has a strong interest in Chinese classical literature, especially in the old-style literary world. He is praised by famous writers at home and abroad. His published works include "Shaolin Yunshui Poetry Collection" and so on.
In the late autumn of 1967, Master Haideng returned to Sichuan from Shanghai. He built a simple thatched cottage on the side of the mountain in Chonghua Town, Jiangyou County, his hometown, named it "Bengyuan Jingshe", and wrote a poem to express his feelings:
Occupy a little sand in the Ganges River, half a ladle of white water Live life; abandon celebrity society on the beach, and form a Kaishi family at the foot of the mountain.
Master Haideng lives in seclusion in the mountains all year round, practicing martial arts and teaching disciples. He lives in seclusion and lives an indifferent life as an ascetic. However, he never leaves Shaolin Kung Fu and Shaolin Temple in his heart. Six years later, in the early spring, with the ambition of "not thinking about old age, but still able to travel across Kyushu", he led four of his apprentices to Songshan Mountain in Henan Province and visited the Shaolin Temple, which had been away for nearly thirty years. This is Master Haideng’s sixth visit to his hometown. When I came to the temple, I saw the snow flying, birds singing, and the pines still standing. Recalling the old days of "dancing upon hearing the bell" and practicing hard Shaolin Kung Fu, I couldn't help but feel the feeling coming from my mouth, and casually recited:
Snowflakes Six birds are singing, and petrels are flying together to recall the sleeping dragon. More than thirty years are nothing but good dreams, and millions of kalpas are nothing but heroes.
Before leaving, I visited the Shaolin Trail to help me forget the midnight clock.
On the way back, he wrote "Revisiting the Four Quatrains of Shaolin", one of which goes like this:
Songshan's martial arts are famous both at home and abroad, and there are many young athletes. Kyushu: It’s just the right time for me to arrive in spring, and the scenery is boundless and the snow never stops.
Expressing high praise for Shaolin martial arts and deep feelings for Shaolin Temple.
After the "Gang of Four" was crushed, Master Hai Deng was so happy that he wrote: "It will take ten years to sit in silence, but I will be a white cow to the world." He is willing to devote his whole life to the revitalization of Shaolin martial arts. In September 1979, Hong Kong Great Wall Pictures and Emei Film Studio co-produced the large-scale news documentary "Sichuan Wonders". Master Haideng resolutely led his disciples to Baoguang Temple, a famous temple in western Sichuan, and performed a wonderful Shaolin martial arts such as "Two Finger Zen" and "Tong Zi Kung Fu" have won praises for "profound skills and stunning skills." At that time, the monks of Baoguang Temple and many young people in Xindu began to learn Shaolin martial arts from Master Hai Deng. Master taught with all his heart and tirelessly. He said in his poem "Ten Miscellaneous Odes of Baoguang Temple":
After years of high mountains and flowing water, I am unable to wash my marrow and dare not sleep; I am willing to pass on what I have learned to new knowledge, and the jade world will be clear and happy for many years.
It embodies the valuable spirit of Master Hai Deng who is always strong and diligent, and teaches his unique Shaolin skills to the younger generation. During this time, the author had a close relationship with Master Hai Deng. I once learned swordsmanship and poetry from him, and was gifted with the "Seven Jue and Four Primes" "In Respect to Master Hai Deng". When Master Haideng was about to leave Baoguang Temple, he gave him a poem with seven rhymes in "Farewell to Feng Jun in Xindu" as a gift:
When I wash my eyes in the clouds and water, I can recognize the immortal talent even in the dust. The green mountains entertain the eye for thousands of miles, and the white moon conveys the heart three or five times.
One sword brings knowledge and wisdom, but for ten years I have no words for Qiu Ya. There are relatives and friends everywhere in the world, and there is no need to worry about the calamity of the world.
Master Haideng has a strong sense of patriotism. In order to inherit and develop the authentic Shaolin martial arts in my country, at the end of 1982, he declined invitations from abroad and returned to the Shaolin Temple in his twenties. "When you come to Shaolin, your dream will be new, and you will see your spirit when you stand tall on the thousands of peaks." In this vibrant "first ancient temple in the world", Master Hai Deng worked tirelessly, taught his skills to his apprentices, and devoted his whole life to the revitalization of Shaolin martial arts and the revitalization of Chinese martial arts. At that time, disciples from Xindu and other parts of Sichuan traveled thousands of miles to visit Master Haideng in Shaolin Temple. The master took photos with them and wrote a poem "Remembering Shu" as a gift:
Ten thousand peaks are not as quiet as this one. A tour full of red pomegranates. A piece of white cloud appears on the soles of my feet, and I remember many important events.
The lover will kill with virtue and true name, and he will help the world and forget his merits. I remember that we came on a quiet road, with the half-hook crescent moon reflecting on the flat lake.
The quiet road mentioned in the poem actually refers to Baoguang Temple in Xindu, and the Pinghu mentioned in the poem actually refers to Sheng'an Guihu Lake in Xindu.
Master Hai Deng "had the authentic teachings of Bodhidharma and possessed amazing stunts". In order to let more people know about his legendary life, the Central News Film Studio decided to shoot a color film of "Master Hai Deng of Shaolin" . In mid-April 1984, the film crew accompanied Master Hai Deng and his entourage back to Baoguang Temple to gather with old friends, both monks and laymen, as well as civil and military disciples. At the end of the year, he had just finished shooting the film in Beijing. At the joint invitation of CCTV and the Chengdu Foreign Affairs Office, he braved the snow and cold to rush to Baoguang Temple with his disciples Fan Yinglian, Li Xingyou and others to participate in the filming to reflect the Buddhist sentiments. life, and the TV film "Buddhist Life" written by the author. Therefore, the author is fortunate to receive another poem from the master, and his encouragement is overwhelming:
A few people know the wonderful meaning of Baoguang, and they once paid homage to the teacher in Efeng; when did I meet a talented man in Guihu, this trip was auspicious Not in vain.
At the same time, Master Haideng visited a martial arts training class taught by his disciples in Xindu on a rainy and snowy dawn. The master happily said to the students who were practicing: "You are all children. Boys and girls, 'boys practice light kung fu, and the more they practice, the better they get.' I hope you will learn martial arts well, practice your skills well, contribute to the 'four modernizations', and bring glory to the country."
[Edit this paragraph] Master Hai Deng’s controversy In the 1980s, Mr. Zhen Binghao, a member of the Propaganda Department of the Dengfeng County Party Committee, wrote a detailed appeal material stating that Master Hai Deng was not a Shaolin Temple The abbot. He found newspapers such as Henan Daily and Zhengzhou Evening News that had previously promoted Hai Deng, and asked them to publish it. Newspapers are reluctant to publish their corrections (so as not to expose the inaccuracies of their reports). Mr. Zhen was still unwilling to give in. He asked a relevant Comrade Han Shuying to forward the appeal materials to President Zhao Puchu, the head of the Chinese Buddhist Association. This was already in 1985.
Later, I received a reply from President Zhao Puchu, which said:
"Comrade Han Shuying: I am here to send you my letter. Master Haideng is a director of the Chinese Buddhist Association and knows martial arts. In the past few years, many newspapers have reported on him. , and even the film studio went too far in making a special film about him, not only the issue of the abbot of Shaolin Temple, but also other things, but the matter has passed. Now Comrade Zhen Binghao has written a clarification, which seems to be not timely enough. When there are reports of this kind again in newspapers and publications, it is better to publish the above opinions in the form of letters from readers for reference.

< p>1985.12.16"After master and apprentice Hai Deng left Shaolin Temple and returned to Sichuan, they set up a "Jiangyou City Master Hai Deng Martial Arts Gym" in Jiangyou. He is very famous, and most martial arts students flock to him. In 1987, Sichuan TV Station filmed 20 episodes of the TV series "Master Hai Deng" for him, recording his legendary deeds. After it was broadcast on the TV station, he became famous both at home and abroad. On December 30, 1985, he accompanied the Chinese film delegation to visit New York, USA, which caused a "Shaolin whirlwind" in the local Chinese society. He performed on stage at the New Voices Theatre, and his disciple Fan Yinglian easily defeated Victor, a young American boxer who was 1.85 meters tall and weighed 160 pounds.
Master Hai Deng once wrote a book called "The Essence of Shaolin Qigong", which has more than 40,000 words. After its publication, it was welcomed by the majority of martial arts enthusiasts. Not only was he highly skilled in martial arts, he was also quite accomplished in Buddhism. In the 1950s, he preached the Diamond Sutra and the Universal Door of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva at the Shanghai Buddhist Youth Association. In his later years, he served as a director of the Buddhist Association of China, a member of the 7th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, director of Master Haideng's Martial Arts Hall in Jiangyou City, and abbot of Jile Temple in Guanwu Mountain. Monk Hai Deng was able to write poems. Later, he collected more than 220 poems in his life and compiled them into "Shaolin Yunshui Poetry Collection", which was published by Bashu Poetry Society. He passed away in Chengdu in January 1989 at the age of eighty-six.
The title of the abbot of Shaolin Temple is false, but his martial arts are indeed extraordinary.
In addition, in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, the great monk Xueting Fuyu of Shaolin Temple was conferred the title of Imperial Master and Abbot Yamato of Shaolin Temple by Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan Dynasty. Xue Ting Fuyu specially drew up seventy generation names in order to preserve the family lineage for future generations. Later generations of Shaolin monks have always strictly adhered to it when choosing Dharma names. This is also a difference between Shaolin monks and other monks. The names of these seventy generations are: "The wise son realizes the blessings and wisdom, and can realize the original perfection. Zhou Hongpu Guangzong, Dao Qing and Xuanzu. Pure and true like the sea, pure and still, pure and pure. Virtue lasts forever, and the wonderful original is always solid." "Judging from the above generation names, the famous modern monks of Shaolin Temple such as Su Xi, De Yang, Xing Zheng, and the current abbot Yongxin are arranged according to the generation list of Xueting Fuyu. This can also prove that Hai Deng is not a Shaolin Temple monk. The monk
