The font used for seals by modern painters is mostly seal script, also called Han seal script. It is also common to use small seal script for engraving.
Characteristics of seals:
1. The seals used in calligraphy and Chinese painting are all seal scripts, that is, large seal script or small seal script;
2. Seals are used for inscriptions in calligraphy and painting. Seal script is preferred, and stone seals are preferred. Occasionally, official script is used, and either vermilion or white script is acceptable;
3. Calligraphy, painting, and seals complement each other, and seals must be hand-engraved by professional seal carvers.
