I have been studying from Mr. Xu for six years. During this period, my father asked the Shoushigong teacher for advice on Fan Jiean's exercises. Teacher Shou said, "Xu Lao has a lot of experience in the study of Qin, Han and India, and he took the right path to learn from xu teacher. I can tell him about the genre in the future. " Later, Mr. Shou gave Fan Jiean two copies of "Ci Brand Printing Spectrum" which he carved himself. Fan Jiean read it and appreciated it. He thought it was more neat than Chinese printing, and it was lively, smooth, elegant and simple. So I continued to learn the seal style of Shoulao.

at the age of 17, besides engraving, I became interested in bamboo carving. After being introduced by my father, I learned bamboo carving from Zhang Zhiyu, a master of bamboo carving in the North School. Teacher Zhang wrote "Parents who suffer from physical problems dare not damage the filial piety" and asked Fan Jiean to carve it for me. He carefully carved it for two days to finish his homework. He was very satisfied after reading it, and said: Bamboo has bamboo lines, and it is easy to tear the bamboo lines when the knife is improperly used. Also talked about the difference between the northern and southern sects of carving bamboo. The knife-holding method of the Northern School, which he founded, is to hold the knife like a pen, go straight into the knife, and can't run rampant. It is slightly deeper than the strokes of the Southern School, and the knife-holding should be rough and lively, with perfect shape and vivid charm. Therefore, bamboo carvers should be good at calligraphy and painting, be interested in learning to carve bamboo, learn to paint, and know how to paint and draw. Later, he introduced Zhang Weihan to learn painting. Teacher Zhang is a court painter in the Ruyi Pavilion in the former Qing Dynasty. He has a good personality, landscapes, figures and flowers and birds are all indispensable. Teacher Zhang teaches students in accordance with their aptitude, knowing that Fan Jiean loves painting plums, and specially teaches the method of sketching and coloring plums with small freehand brushwork. He said that the court likes to embed this kind of small freehand brushwork plum as a partition heart.

The main purpose of Fan Jiean's study of calligraphy and painting is to learn from Mr. Zhang's northern bamboo carving. According to the teacher's habit of carving bamboo at night, Fan Jiean often stays up with him. Learn art at night, help him carve some fan bones, etc., and then trim him after Fan Jiean carves them. In the long-term practice, I learned his bamboo carving techniques bit by bit. Mr. Zhang's northern bamboo carving has many innovative techniques, and the carving method of leaving green skin on the sand, which was pioneered by him, is very popular with people at that time. He carved the fan bone with green skin from the south into a positive calligraphy painting, then leveled the ground, and then picked out the sand shape with the tip of the knife. After waxing, the ground was yellow sand, and the picture was tender green, which was extremely elegant and beautiful. Moreover, he carved plum flowers with the pattern of Xiang Fei bamboo, carved branches with the earth, leveled the rest and picked out the sand shape, and made Xiang Fei's clever carving of mending flowers, which was of great appreciation value. Mr. Zhang's sculpture, meticulous brushwork or freehand brushwork of flowers and birds, as well as the imitation of spring coins and tiles in Qin and Han Dynasties, were just right in relief and shallow carving, which made people fondle, and was praised by scholars at that time. These techniques were taught patiently by teachers and studied hard by themselves, and Fan Jiean gradually learned them. From 1936, with the recommendation of teacher Zhang, Shoushigong, Xu Yansun, Zhang Haoru, Chen Banding and other teachers, Fan Jiean began to hang slips and engrave them in Nanzhi shops such as Rong Baozhai and Qingmi Pavilion. Until more than ten years after liberation, Fan Jiean sold more than 3, handles of fan bones, as well as pen holders, wrist pillows and many other pieces. Unfortunately, the rubbings of these engravings no longer exist today.

from 1949 to 1979, when Fan Jiean retired, he worked in several primary schools in Dongcheng District. After 198, due to the reform and opening up and the rise of tourism, Yanjing Painting and Calligraphy Society, Beijing Painting Shop and other units invited to re-carve the landscape; In 1982, Fan Jiean ordered a batch of fan bones and hand pillows from Suzhou to resume the bamboo carving process. Mr. Zhang Zhiyu passed away in 1962, and another brother Wang Zhuan, a descendant of the Northern School who carved bamboo, also died in 1978. The responsibility of the Northern School, which was painstakingly initiated by Mr. Zhang, fell on Fan Jiean's shoulders. Fan Jiean is trying to teach the teacher's skills to the next generation of young people who love bamboo carving without reservation. In 1984, he gave a lecture at the seal cutting class held in Chaoyang District Cultural Center. Later, he taught at home for more than 6 times, and there were more than 1 correspondence students from other provinces such as Guangdong, Jiangsu, Gansu, Jilin and Hebei. In 1986, he was hired as a librarian of Beijing Literature and History Research Institute, and also participated in the China Old People's Book Association and Beijing Calligraphy Association. He has published works such as Fan Jiean's Collection of Bamboo Carving, Calligraphy and Painting, and Ten Lectures on Seal Carving. He died in Beijing on December 3, 21.
