Chen Bangyan (1678~1752), whose courtesy name was Shinan, also known as Chunhui and Gaolu, was a native of Haining, Zhejiang. In the 42nd year of Kangxi (1703), he became a Jinshi and became the Minister of Rites. Chen Bangyan's calligraphy originated from the Second Wang Dynasty. He worked in small regular script and got the essence of Dong Qichang. He was deeply appreciated by Emperor Kangxi and became one of the four Kangxi calligraphers.
The scroll of "Jia Rui Fu" is collected in the Palace Museum in Beijing. The calligraphy is elegant and vigorous, sparse and clear. It has a profound influence on Dong's calligraphy and is a typical "Qianlu" official calligraphy style of the Kangxi Dynasty.
