This is a couplet by Mr. Pan Zhulan, and it is two sentences that Mr. Pan has to learn after earnestly warning him about calligraphy. Literally, if he wants to achieve something in calligraphy, he must thoroughly study Chinese characters. By extension, things begin and end, and things end.
Pan Zhulan (1909-200 1) is a native of Fuzhou, Fujian. My father, Pan, is a famous Confucian scholar in Fuzhou. He is not an official. He only likes to grow orchids, and he doesn't choose those who are not "naive". Zeng Zeng, a famous calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty, took Su Xin Zhai as his name. Pan Zhulan came from a family, and his son inherited his father's business. He was nicknamed "Xiao Su Xin Zhai" and his real name was Cynthia. He studied, planted orchids, recited poems, carved books, wrote and painted all his life.
