Jiangyan City belonged to Wu, Yue and Chu successively during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and the Qin Dynasty belonged to Donghai County. In the sixth year of Emperor founding ceremony (1 17 BC), Hailing County was established. In the third year of Wude in Tang Gaozu (620), Hailing was changed to Wuling, and in the first year of Southern Tang Dynasty (937), it was promoted to Taizhou.
