4 "Book of Songs·Zhou Nan·樛木"

There are 樛 (jiū) trees in the south,

ge (gě)蟟(lěi) Tired of it.

Happiness is only a gentleman,

Blessed and comfortable.

There are cypress trees in the south,

and kudzu trees are in the wilderness.

Le is a gentleman,

Fulu (lǚ) will take care of him.

There are locust trees in the south,

Ge and vines are lingering on them.

Happiness is only a gentleman,

Happiness will lead to success.

Overview

This is a folk song to congratulate newlyweds.

The poet first used kudzu to wrap around the locust tree,

as a metaphor for a woman marrying her husband.

Then bless the groom,

wishing him a happy and

fulfilling life.

There are three chapters in the poem,

Only two words have been changed in each chapter,

The sentence structure has been straightened out,

Notes

1) 樛 (jiū): a tree that is curved but tall.

2) Pueraria (gě) and lěi: a perennial herbaceous plant with purple-red flowers. The stems can be used as ropes and the fibers can be woven into Pueraria cloth. Grasshoppers resemble kudzu, wild grapes and the like.

3) Tired: climbing, entangled. I'm tired again here.

4) Only: modal particles.

5) Gentleman: This refers to the groom who is getting married.

6) Fu Lu: Fu Lu, happiness.

7) Sui: Stability, the meaning of comforting people.

9) Change: support; or interpret it as "big".
