Zhao Yunyu was born in 1916 in Langzhong, Sichuan. His original name was Wei, and later he changed his name to Zhao Shi, with the courtesy name Yunyu and the character Xing.
He entered a private school as a child and specialized in painting, calligraphy and poetry after graduating from middle school.
In 1945, he went to Chengdu to study painting under Zhang Daqian, and at the same time taught at Chengdu Minyun Art College.
After 49 years, he was engaged in drama reform work in the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office.
In 1952, he joined the Sichuan Provincial Museum to specialize in the appraisal of calligraphy and painting and the reproduction of ancient calligraphy and painting.
At about 11:20 pm on January 12, 2003, Zhao Yunyu, a famous calligrapher and painter in Sichuan Province, died suddenly at the age of 87. News of Mr. Zhao's death shocked the Sichuan cultural circle, relevant provincial and municipal leaders, the Provincial Department of Culture, the Municipal Cultural Bureau, the Provincial and Municipal Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Provincial and Municipal Artists Association, and Mr. Zhao's hometown Langzhong Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, all of whom sent representatives to express their condolences.
