We can't see the original works of Wang Xizhi now. Some of the works we have seen called Wang Xizhi are copies after the Tang Dynasty. However, these copies of Tang people are also rare treasures. Shenlong Ben Lanting is one of them.
This volume of Preface to the Lanting Pavilion is called "Dragon Book" because it has a small seal of Tang Zhongzong Li Xian's Shenlong year number at the front. It is said that it was copied by Feng Chengsu, a calligrapher in the period of Emperor Taizong.
It is said that Emperor Taizong sent someone to obtain the original Preface to the Lanting Pavilion by almost fraudulent means, and regarded it as a treasure, and ordered the good calligraphers in the DPRK to copy and expand several copies and give them to princes and ministers. Finally, Emperor Taizong, who deeply loved Xizhi's calligraphy, brought the original works to Zhaoling, leaving endless regrets for later generations.
