Art education in Peking University has a long tradition. When Mr Cai Yuanpei was the president of Peking University, he vigorously advocated and implemented aesthetic education and art education. On the one hand, he personally set up an aesthetics course in Peking University and started to write a General Theory of Aesthetics. On the other hand, he organized "Painting Research Society", "Calligraphy Research Society" and "Music Research Society" in Peking University, and hired a group of famous artists such as Xu Beihong, Xiao, Liu Tianhua and Hu to teach and guide students' artistic activities in Peking University. Thanks to Mr. Cai Yuanpei's efforts, Peking University has become a university with a strong artistic atmosphere, and soon became the center of aesthetic education and art education in China, forming a valuable tradition of attaching importance to aesthetic education and art education, and attaching importance to aesthetic research and art research.
Peking University established the Art Department 1997. For more than ten years, the Art Department of Peking University has always adhered to the general policy of paying equal attention to Tao (humanistic connotation) and skill (artistic skills), theory and application, and quality education and professional education, and has made remarkable achievements in discipline construction, quality education and the construction of teaching staff. The College of Art consists of four departments: Art Theory Department, Film and Television Department, Fine Arts Department and Music Department. At the same time, there are five research institutions: Peking University TV Research Center, Peking University Film and Television Drama Research Center, Peking University Calligraphy Art Research Institute, Peking University Kunqu Opera Inheritance and Research Center, and Peking University Art Institute National Music and Musical Research Center. The College of Art has also set up a digital media experimental teaching center in Peking University (the experimental area for training innovative media talents led by the Ministry of Education), and has received strong support from Peking University Cultural Industry Research Institute (the national research base for innovation and development of cultural industries) and Peking University Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education Research Center (the key research base for liberal arts of the Ministry of Education). At present, the College of Art is actively preparing to build an art building, which will build a large-scale art exhibition hall, a library of books, audio-visual materials and a digital film research database.
