Luo Fuyi’s calligraphy and seal cutting

Mr. Luo Fuyi, in addition to devoting his whole life to the research of ancient seals, also personally handles seals. He is also a famous seal master in China and has long been admired by scholars. Influenced by his family environment, he loved making seals since he was a child. When he was seventeen, he published "Taishixuan Antique Seals".

The characteristics of Mr. Luo Fuyi's seal management in his early years:

First, he did not follow the trend of the times to gain popularity and gain fame; his seal management was entirely based on his love for the ancient art of seals. Second, he has profound seal-making skills. He is a descendant of the Qin Dynasty and the Han Dynasty, and pays great attention to the rules of the square and the circle.

Third, he studied hard and pursued technical proficiency. These points remained true until Mr.'s later years.

Mr. Luo Fuyi, who governs seals, strongly advocates that the Warring States, Qin, and Chinese characters should not be mixed, inverted, or confused, let alone pieced together, borrowed, or invented. Whenever a gentleman begins to practice seal writing, he must first examine whether the characters are suitable for imitating the Qin Dynasty or the Han Dynasty. If the characters are found in "Shuowen Jiezi", he must then consider whether the characters are suitable for Zhuwen, Baiwen, or both. Give. If there are missing words or words that don't fit together, change the entire arrangement. He believes that if the characters that are not included in "Shuowen Jiezi" are pieced together or invented by borrowing radicals, "many modern seal scripts will be produced, which will cause endless trouble for future generations."

Mr. Luo Fuyi's seal management advocates a strict, well-proportioned, regular layout without any specification. The teacher believes: "The ancient seals had neat characters and were not damaged at first. Because they had been in the soil for thousands of years, the copper corroded or damaged the characters. It was not intentional." Therefore, he is most opposed to knocking corners and deliberately making things old. Therefore, in his engravings, he strives to pursue the true meaning of the ancients, conform to nature, seek changes in rigor, and show his spirit in stability. Therefore, his works are beautiful, regular, elegant and lovely.

As for the technique of swordsmanship, Mr. Luo Fuyi opposed the wild and arrogant work, and admired the saying of Wan Shouqi of the Qing Dynasty: "In modern times, when engraving, more emphasis is placed on rules and regulations, but not on the shortcomings of calligraphy. As a result, calligraphy is dead and calligraphy is also dead." ". The teacher believes that since the Yuan and Ming dynasties, there have been fewer people who have learned to make seals, but more people who have learned to chisel. Therefore, there is a kind of "knife technique", especially the kind of engraving technique that carves out one stroke with one knife, which is even more popular in modern times. For, it is not enough for the law. Therefore, when you are making seals, you should first carve them with finer strokes, and then try to refine them bit by bit until you are satisfied. Therefore, it is steady, calm, stretched, free and easy. The stone seal has both the simplicity and majesty of the ancient bronze seal and the elegance and beauty of the ancient jade seal. This is consistent with the artistic requirements of Mr. Wang's fonts, layout and other aspects.

Mr. Luo Fuyi once said that seal carving "Although seal carving is a small skill, it requires perseverance and cultivation. It cannot be mastered overnight." The reason why Mr. Xiang Zhiyin has profound attainments and outstanding achievements is the result of his perseverance and lifelong efforts.

Mr. Luo Fuyi studies cultural relics and archaeology in a wide range of areas. In addition to seals and ancient characters, he also studies Qing court historical materials, ancient official systems, oracle bones, Han bamboo slips, ancient scales, ancient measuring instruments, mirrors, silver ingots, and stone carvings. There are writings on it, epitaphs, stone classics of Han and Wei dynasties, ancient medical books and ethnic minorities in Xixia, Liao, Jin and Yuan. Among them, "Characteristics of Chinese Seals", "Ancient Seals Collection", "Ancient Seals Collection", "Introduction to Ancient Seals", "Overview of Seal Chapters" (co-authored) have rigorous textual research and have a great influence on the art of seal cutting. During his lifetime, he was a fourth-level associate researcher of the Palace Museum, an advisory member of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, and a director of the Archaeological Society of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Ancient Literature Society, and the Xiling Seal Society
