The life of the character

I worked as a teacher in Jinhua rural area in the early 1960s, and I have been a Chinese teacher for 45 years. Talking about why he is keen on calligraphy, Mr. Zhou told me an interesting story more than 40 years ago: when he was teaching in the countryside of 1962, farmers often asked him to name laundry baskets, shoulder poles and wooden barrels. Because of poor writing, I often find excuses to refuse. But once, an old farmer insisted that he write a hanging scroll, saying, "It doesn't matter if it's not well written, you don't have to pay." Who knows that he left a sentence after writing: I didn't expect your handwriting to be "really ugly" and left angrily. It was this experience that inspired his determination to study calligraphy hard. It was not until he retired that he had enough time to continue practicing calligraphy. With the support of his wife, he became a full-time calligrapher. In 2009, he was invited to participate in "Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of New China". He said that most of the people who attended the Pen Club were "old ministers" and "old generals" in China and famous calligraphers in China. "I'm just a nobody. I am really lucky to be invited to participate in such an activity. " Zhou Yongzhi's works are also linked to the works of great calligraphers all over the country. His works have attracted a lot of attention, saying that his works are "looking at a word from a distance, looking at a painting from a distance".

"Gestures, dripping fun. He learned a lesson from the past, but didn't stick to it. He dares to break through the stereotype of his predecessor and has a strong sense of self in his works. When the pen is as heavy as a boulder, it falls to the ground, and even a sentence in the scroll is unstoppable. If the pen is light, it is like a shock, and there is no trace to be found, which achieves the effect of breaking the pen and forms a distinctive artistic feature. Many famous calligraphers in China once commented on Zhou Yongzhi's calligraphy.

From a distance, it is a painting, and from a close look, it is a word. Zhou Yongzhi is good at cursive writing. He claims to be a grassroots calligraphy lover. In recent years, with the propaganda of the media and magazines, Zhou Yongzhi has become famous, and he also has a certain reputation in the calligraphy circle in China. He is often invited by organizations to participate in various activities, and many publications solicit contributions and compile books from him. Master of Contemporary Calligraphy listed him as a "master" with China famous calligraphers Shen Peng, Ouyang Zhongshi, Li Duo and Wang Xuezhong, and the essay introduced him as a famous calligrapher.

Zhou Yongzhi's words fell from the sky like a huge stone, crashing to the ground. At first, they seemed to be shocked and disappeared without a trace. Asked about the reason, he revealed that the inspiration for his creation came from Lingquan Waterfall and strange cave walls. Yes 1998, Zhou Yongzhi was invited by Shuanglong Scenic Area to help develop Xianpu Cave. The task is to write a poem after the experience. In this way, he had to go deep into the cave and feel for himself. After the mission, he left a deep impression on Pu Xian Cave. When he picked up a brush to write, the scenery in the cave seemed to be imprinted in his mind, so that his writing was influenced by it. When he sees a boulder in front of him, he will write a big word, with a great color and a single line; When he sees an empty place, he will leave a blank on the paper; And when he sees pebbles on the roadside, he will write some small characters with small snow prints. It is such a special experience that his cursive script has reached the realm of "character" and "scenery".

Zhou Yongzhi said that in order to thank his hometown, a hot land where he was born and raised in Sri Lanka, and to thank the people in his hometown for their care and support, he founded Zhou Yongzhi Art Museum in the ancient houses in Hengdian, Dongyang. It is his greatest wish to make some contributions to his hometown in his lifetime.
