Zhanjiang has a long history and is the largest city in western Guangdong. Because it is close to the sea, it was ruled by western countries in modern times.

Zhanjiang area was formerly called "Guangzhou Bay". This name was formed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Some scholars say it is named after the "Guangzhou Bay" village in the South Three Islands, while others think it is named because Gaolei House is under the jurisdiction of Guangzhou and is in the middle of "Guangzhou" on the map.

1897, the French warship Bayar was lured by a typhoon into the "Guangzhou Bay" and offered calligraphy to the government to rent the "Guangzhou Bay", which opened the prelude to the colonial history of Guangzhou Bay.

Today, the jurisdiction of Zhanjiang was in the middle and late Neolithic period (between Xia and Shang Dynasties) 5000-6000 years ago, and it was inhabited by human beings. When Qin Shihuang unified China, Zhanjiang belonged to Xiang County. Xuwen County was established in Han Dynasty to govern the whole Leizhou Peninsula and Hepu County. In the Tang Dynasty, "Fujian people moved to Hezhou" (that is, Leizhou Peninsula). Before the Southern Song Dynasty, Yuan soldiers marched south, and a large number of Fujian and Chaozhou residents moved south from the sea. Chikan, the old city, began to become a port. After the Yuan Dynasty, the coastal salt industry was quite prosperous. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, handicraft industry developed greatly, especially the grid cloth. Since 1898, the urban area has been leased by France, and it was named "Guangzhou Bay" at that time.

After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, coastal ports fell one after another, and Guangzhou Bay (now Zhanjiang City), as a French concession, was in a desperate situation, and its foreign trade and economic development once flourished. During the period of 1943, Guangzhou Bay gradually declined after Japanese occupation. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Guangzhou Bay returned and was designated as Zhanjiang City.
Before the establishment of Zhanjiang City, its scope belonged to Suixi and Wuchuan counties. From the Sui Dynasty to the early Tang Dynasty, the old county village of Huguang Town in the suburbs was once ruled by Tieba County and Suixi County.
In the third year of Jingyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1278), Yuan soldiers went south, and in the Southern Song Dynasty, the monarch and his ministers fled south from the coast of Fujian. Zhao Gang, the Emperor of the Song Dynasty, died of fright. Zhao Min is located in the present East Island, and the island was upgraded to Xianglong County. At that time, Chikan, the oldest city in the city, began to form a commercial port. From Hongwu period of Ming Dynasty to Yongzheng period of Qing Dynasty, the inspection department of publishing Sichuan was set up in the old counties and villages in the suburbs and Dongdao.
1898 In March, during the land-cutting frenzy of western capitalism after the Second Opium War, France asked the Qing government to allow the lease of the Xiaowan village "Guangzhou Bay" belonging to wuchuan city (now the three southern islands), and then wantonly expanded to the east and west inland, causing loyal opposition from patriotic officials and people in Suixi and Wuchuan. This is the famous Guangzhou Bay people's resistance to the law.

Because the Qing government was afraid of foreign compromise, in October of the 25th year of Guangxu reign (1899, 165438+ 10), under the coercion of France, the Sino-French Treaty on the Concession of Guangzhou Bay was signed, which brought Suixi and Wuchuan counties and Maxie Bay between them (now Zhanjiang).
Since then, Guangzhou Bay has become an independent administrative region. Its scope: it starts from Tongming Port in Suixi County in the south, reaches Xinxu along Lu Guan to Zhiman, turns northeast to the north of Chikan and the south of Fujian Village, goes to sea eastward, crosses the northern surface of Diaoshun Island, lands in Douliwo, Wuchuan County, and goes to sea eastward in the middle of Xipaotai River. Starting from the sea surface 3 nautical miles away from the land, south along the sea surface outside Naozhou Island and Dongdao Island until the sea surface 3 nautical miles away from Tongming Port; The total land area is 5 18 square kilometers. After the victory of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, on September 2/day of the 34th year of the Republic of China (1945), China also recovered Guangzhou Bay from Japanese and French, and designated it as "Zhanjiang City" within the original scope. Zhanjiang Municipal Government was established on June 5th, 1946+ 15. It is a city under the jurisdiction of the province and belongs to the administrative inspector office of the seventh district of Guangdong Province. The municipal government is still located in Xiying. In March, 1937 (1948), it was transferred to the administrative supervision department of the eighth district; In May, 1938 (1949), it was transferred to the Administrative Supervision Department of District 14, based in Zhanjiang.
1949 12 19, Zhanjiang was liberated and retained as a provincial city; Since June 1952 1 1, it has been subordinate to Zhanjiang Regional Commissioner's Office and Zhanjiang Regional Administrative Office successively, and is the location of regional offices in Lu Nan, Korea, western Guangdong and Zhanjiang. The regional administrative organ is located in Chikan; The municipal administrative organ is located in Xiashan, and the general scope of the urban area has not changed much.
From June 65438 to September 0983, Zhanjiang area and Zhanjiang City merged into Zhanjiang City, which was a province directly under the Central Government. The former Zhanjiang City was divided into Chikan, Xiashan and Potou. Zhanjiang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal People's Government are in Chikan, and the Standing Committee of Municipal People's Congress and CPPCC are in Xiashan.
