Zhang Xuguang, born in June, 1955, is from Anxin County, Hebei Province. Former member of China Calligraphers Association, Deputy Secretary-General, Deputy Director of Appraisal Committee and Deputy Director of Academic Committee. He is currently a member and deputy secretary-general of China Artists Association, deputy director of cursive script committee of China Calligraphers Association, visiting professor of Peking University Calligraphy Research Institute, tutor of calligraphy art studio in Zhang Xuguang, Tsinghua University, visiting professor of Central Academy of Fine Arts, and member of art committee of China Art Museum. He has served as the deputy director of the China Lanting Calligraphy Award, the 8th National Exhibition, the 9th National Exhibition and the 1st Youth Exhibition, and is responsible for organizing the evaluation.
Zhang Xuguang advocated "rereading the classics" and put forward that "we should explore the long river of tradition with modern aesthetic consciousness, tap the torrent of modern aesthetics, and make the creation come from the source of the long river of tradition and stand at the tide of the times, that is, the old and the new move towards the future." His thoughts of "having taste in place", "developing new calligraphy" and "activating Tang Kai", as well as his creative style, have widely influenced the China book circle and formed the mainstream book style, so he is called the leader of the contemporary book circle.
