Yan's calligraphy creation can be roughly divided into three periods: before the age of 50, it belongs to the early stage, which is the stage when he learned from the ancients and folk calligraphy and digested and absorbed it. Representative works of regular script include "Thousands of Buddhist temples and pagodas" and "Dong Fangshuo's Painting Theory".
50 ~ 60 years old is the middle period of Yan Zhenqing's calligraphy creation. The representative works of regular script "A Fool Remains a Stump" and "The Temple Monument of Taibao Guo Jingzhi" show that its magnificent original style has been formed. The running script works in this issue include My Nephew's Manuscript, Shooting with Guo Servant and Liu Zhongtie. When he was 60 years old, he finished writing "Yan Bei", which marked that his calligraphy art entered a fully mature later stage. Later generations compiled the Collection of Yan Wen.
