Zheng Daozhao is not a pure calligrapher, but a scholar. On the Zheng Wengong Monument, he is known as "a gifted scholar who studies pictures, notes and seals". He is a linguist through and through. In his thirties, he was awarded Zhongshulang and was also a poet. Finally, as a national son, he offered wine and wrote inscriptions everywhere. This is the revelation of his knowledge and the natural manifestation of his calligraphy style. The so-called "calligrapher, painting with heart" has reached a calligraphy realm of "harmony between man and nature". Because of this, each of his works has a different look under the same general style. Even some rules, some vertical boss, but written on Zheng Daozhao, rules are not stiff, vertical boss is not wild. It can be said that Zheng Daozhao's handwriting is more talented than his skill, so that when we studied stone carving in Yunfeng, it was either too blunt or too barren, and few people really absorbed its essence, because it was impossible to learn from the appearance.
Since the rise of stele study, many people have studied Yunfeng stone carvings, from Kang Youwei to Zhao, to Li Ruiqing, Yu Youren and so on. Have been greatly influenced by Yunfeng stone carving, but there is a phenomenon worthy of attention. They seldom write Zheng Daozhao's works temporarily, and occasionally, they don't write much. Among these people, Li Ruiqing is the most alike, but this is not his best work. His friend Zeng Xi said that he was missed by Zheng Bei for twenty years. These calligraphers themselves said that they were greatly influenced by Yunfeng stone carving, but why did they come so little? Because they are pursuing spiritual intake, not physical similarity. We compare Zhao's four big screen running scripts, Kang Youwei's running script and the stone carvings of Yunfeng, and find that their spiritual charm is very similar, and they all take God for granted, but they don't care about details. This is what we said earlier: it is not feasible to seek truth from traces.
