Wen Zhiming's calligraphy is warm and graceful, steady and mature, rigorous in statutes and vivid in conception. Although there is no vigorous momentum, it has the charm of calligraphy in Jin and Tang Dynasties. His book style is less angry, and in his freehand brushwork, he often reveals a gentle and elegant atmosphere. Perhaps the ups and downs of his official career have killed his spirit of death, but he is a late bloomer and his style is becoming more and more calm. Wen Zhiming is a leading figure in wu school after Shen Zhou, with many disciples, which formed the largest painting school in Wumen area at that time.
Dong Qichang was called "Zhang Xing Mi Dong" in calligraphy at that time, that is, he was tied with Linyi Xing Dong, Zhang Jin Jiang Ruitu and Xu Tianmi. There is a saying in the painting that the south is east and the north is rice. He, Mo Shilong, Chen Jiru and others advocated the theory of "North-South School", that is, the landscape paintings of "courtyard style" and "literati painting" were artificially divided into two schools. Dong Qichang's calligraphy brought a fresh breath to the book circle in the late Ming Dynasty, and his calligraphy theory aroused strong repercussions in the book circle in the late Ming Dynasty. In the early Qing Dynasty, his calligraphy was greatly favored by Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong. The two emperors called on everyone to take Shu Dong as their ancestor, so Dong Qichang's calligraphy style was quite popular in the Qing Dynasty. Shu Dong dominated the trend of a generation, occupying an important position after Zhao Mengfu and Wen Zhiming.
Both Wen Zhiming and Dong Qichang achieved great artistic achievements, reaching the point of perfection. Comparatively speaking, Wen Zhiming is more famous and his works have higher artistic value. This gap is reflected in the auction price of their works. For example, Wen Zhiming's "Autumn Moon on Wushan Mountain" (hand scroll) fetched 8.8 million yuan, Wen Zhiming's "Fine Landscape Scroll" (153 1 year) fetched 24.64 million yuan, and Beijing Poly's "The Red Leaves on the Fishing Beam" fetched 654 million yuan.
The market price of Dong Qichang is 1.999, and the transaction price of the masterpiece of landscape painting "Quehua Autumn Color Map" auctioned by Beijing Hanhai is 1.32 million yuan; 200 1 "smoke ridge and rain" fan was sold at Shanghai jinghua auction for 38,500 yuan; In the same year, the opening page of Regular Script 15 was sold at China Guardian Auction for1705,000 yuan; In 2002, Landscape Map was sold at the International Trade Shengjia Auction for 2.42 million yuan.
