Introduction to Master Panneng

Master Banneng (1906-1997), whose common name is Xu Zhiguang, was born in Leshan City, Sichuan Province. In 1920, he became a monk at Wuyou Temple in Leshan. He studied at Sichuan Buddhist College, Beijing Berlin Buddhist College, and Wuchang Buddhist College. He has successively served as abbot of Wuyou Temple, president of Leshan Buddhist Association, librarian of Sichuan Provincial Literature and History Research Center, executive director of Buddhist Association of China, secretary-general and vice-president of Sichuan Buddhist Association, provost of Sichuan Nun Buddhist College, Xindu Baoguang Abbot of the temple, honorary president of the Emeishan Buddhist Association, and representative of the Sichuan Provincial People's Congress. He is good at literature and calligraphy. He is the author of "Collection of Couplets of Wuyou Temple" and "A Brief History of Lingyun and Wuyou Temple". Passed away peacefully at Wuyou Temple in Leshan on February 4, 1997.
