The predecessor of Shangrao Normal College was Shangrao Normal College founded in 1958. In 1959, it was renamed Northeastern Jiangxi University. It resumed school in 1977 and was upgraded to Shangrao Normal College in March 2000 with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Jiangxi Province. In November 2005, it passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation by the Ministry of Education.
