Ma Dezhao's masterpiece

His works of art

Ma Dezhao is not only famous for his martial arts, but also a great calligrapher. His calligraphy "A Shou Zi Bei", the "Tiger Bei" with the signature "Xima Shudezhao" and the stone carving "Kuixing Diandou" which integrates calligraphy and painting have been displayed in Anbeilin (Room 4) of the National Calligraphy Treasures Museum. The tablet of "Kuixing Diandou" carved during the Tongzhi period was cleverly combined into the image of Kuixing, holding the inkstone in his left hand, writing with his right hand, leaning the word "Dou" with one foot and standing on the word "Ao". Its rich imagination and ingenious composition are wonderful. It is a famous inscription in Xi 'an Forest of Steles. The image connotation of Kuixing's unique position makes it a vivid propaganda material of imperial examination culture, which is spread all over the country and has been exhibited in major imperial examination exhibitions so far.

Majia Courtyard is a famous modern garden landscape in Langzhong.

When Ma Dezhao retired to his hometown in his later years, the court rewarded him for building the "Shaanxi-Gansu Prefect Military House" in Langzhong, which was commonly known as "Majiafu" among the people. The mansion is located in the southwest of Haitang River in Liaoyegou, at the southern foot of Huanghua Mountain. Built at the end of Tongzhi, it covers an area of about 130 mu with a building area of about 5000 square meters. By the mountains and rivers, sitting north facing south. It is built according to the palace style, with symmetrical central axis, reasonable layout, magnificent momentum, pavilions, quaint and quiet. The mansion consists of zhaobi, square, mast, stone lion, gate, patrol room, hall courtyard house, East Flower Hall, West Flower Hall, left and right study rooms, main rooms, wing rooms, Sijunlou, lotus pond, pavilions, corridors and other buildings. Among them, Sanjin Courtyard is the center of the mansion, with a large courtyard of 3000 square meters, eight carved doors in the east and west compartments, and a main room in the middle. The building is double eaves and nine ridges, all of which are green glazed pipe tiles. Ridge ornaments, hanging animals, kisses and treasure tops are all made of glass, with blue, brown and dark yellow glazes, green tiles and glittering treasure tops. The beams of the hall are neat and decorated with Zhu Danhua, which is radiant. There is a big hall on the shrine in the middle of the hall, and the word "patent pavilion" is engraved horizontally on the hall, which is the place where the imperial edict is placed. On both sides of the main house of the quadrangle, there are 2,500 square meters of east and west flower houses, which are full of flowers and trees. In addition to herbs, the West Flower Hall is dominated by plum blossoms, including wintersweet, red plum, green plum and Bai Mei. In addition to woody plants, the East Flower Hall is famous for peony, including lying oolong, castle peak snow, drunken imperial concubine, hidden treasure,, and kudzuvine purple. The four seasons are full of flowers, so people also call it "Majia Garden".

A small lake was dug in the north of Xihuating. Lotus flowers are planted all over the lake, and peach willows are planted all around the lake. There is a pavilion in the middle of the lake, with four ridges and cornices, and wind chimes are placed on the cornices. When the moon is bright and the wind is clear, the bell is quiet. Arch bridges and corridors are all white stone railings with figures and flowers embossed on them. When you board the pavilion, you can see the Jinping White Pagoda from a distance and take a closer look at the willows in Haitang Creek. More than a dozen miles are full of green screens. The pavilion is surrounded by lotus flowers and semi-willow colors. It can be described as "four lotus flowers and three willows, one village, one mountain and one lake".

On the right side of the West Flower Hall, the "Sijunlou" is built, with a height of about18m, four columns and three double eaves, and a bucket arch gradually rising. There are eight wood-carved lattice doors on each floor, and the words "Sijunlou" are written in regular script in the middle of the building, and the "Sijunlou" is on the upper floor.

There is a cemetery on the foot of Miaoer Mountain about 800 meters to the right of the mansion, which is the mausoleum of Ma Gong. The tomb is 3 meters high and surrounded by stone walls. In front of the tomb, there is a cornice pavilion with three overlapping arches. The mausoleum is located on a hill, surrounded by cypress trees, which is magnificent. On the left and right sides of the tomb, there is a huge (turtle-shaped stone pedestal) supported by tombstones. Under the twelve stone steps, there is a rectangular stone patio with stone carvings arranged on both sides. There is a stone watch engraved with Yunlong relief on the left and right sides. The front row of the stone table is listed as a stone man, about 3 meters high, holding a stone horse, with black mane on the left and mare milk on the right. This is a mount that has made great achievements with the public for more than 30 years. The lieutenant holds the bridle in his hand, the knife in his right hand, the horse's head raised, his tail turned up and his front hoof rolled up to fly. In addition, there are stone carvings of Kirin, Sister-in-law, Green Lion, White Elephant, Shi Hu, Shiyang, Crane and Stork, all of which are exquisite and subtle.

Majia Mansion buildings and gardens are the highest official residences in northern Sichuan since the late Qing Dynasty, and they are also the largest, rich and elegant private gardens. Their fame is widely known in Sichuan and Shaanxi, especially among Langzhong people. Until the Republic of China, it was still a scene in Langzhong that people admired and boasted. Unfortunately, all this was destroyed in the Cultural Revolution, but the underground tomb survived.
