Liu is a commonly used Chinese character, pronounced as or. His variant "Yue" first appeared in Shuo Wen Jie Zi, the original meaning was to kill, and later it was extended to refer to weapons such as axes and cymbals.

There is no word "Liu" in Shuo Wen Jie Zi, which is probably lost because of avoiding the surname of Liu of Emperor Gaozu. However, there is a word with "Liu" as the radical in Historical Records, but there is no word "Zhong". On this basis, Xu Kai concluded that the traditional "Liu" was mistaken for "Tian" because of the crooked "Dao" (Yan).
